HBO’s comedy-drama Somebody Somewhere has wrapped up after three seasons. The Bridget Everett-starrer debuted in January 2022 and quickly garnered love from critics, as well as viewers.
The show was praised for its authentic exploration of heartbreak and clumsy laughs, all set in this-is-actually-Kansas, not Hollywood version of Kansas. Everett portrayed Sam, a woman in her forties navigating grief, friendships, and the search for belonging.
Season 3 (and now final season) premiered in October 2024. While critics praised it and the season also racked up several awards, HBO still announced there’s no Season 4 on the horizon.
The heartbreak extended far beyond HBO’s doors. When the finale aired in December 2024, it was met with an outpouring of love and support. Fans even launched a petition to revive the show, quickly surpassing 23,000 signatures.
While both fans and the cast have expressed disappointment over the decision, Somebody Somewhere is done for (at least for now).
Will there ever be a Season 4 of Somebody Somewhere?

No, it’s not happening, at least not on HBO. Back in August 2024, HBO slammed the door shut and announced Somebody Somewhere would call it quits after season three. The finale is your endpoint, so fans can forget crossing their fingers for Season 4.
As far as the show is concerned, fans seemed seriously invested, especially since Somebody Somewhere scored a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes every season! Viewers hoped the overwhelming buzz would either keep the show alive or at least earn it a more fitting farewell. But in the end, the TV gods giveth, and they taketh away.
Meanwhile, HBO hasn’t officially disclosed why it pulled the plug, but industry watchers speculate that it’s all about the numbers. The show wasn’t drawing the viewers HBO wants these days.
In this era, streamers want to deliver the next mega-franchise or splashy billion-dollar epic, so smaller cult hits (even if critics are swooning) barely stand a chance. Prestige TV is a nice slogan, but at the end of the day, if you’re not bringing in Game of Thrones-level hype, you are living on borrowed time.
Showrunner Bridget Everett, who knew about a troubled future after wrapping Season 3, explained in an interview with Vulture that she wasn't prepared to bid farewell to Sam or to the found-family situation central to the show.
Both Everett and series colleague Jeff Hiller talked about their overwhelming feelings of loss.
“We’re all going to be in Kansas for a finale watch party. I was like, Oh my God, am I just going to be crying all weekend again? Right now, I feel like I’m at my own funeral. I am reading all these nice things about the show. Tim and I talk a little bit. We both feel like we’re the most desperately sad about it. The other night, I watched episode 305 three times in a row or something like that. I don’t want it to be over. I am going to miss everybody so much and what we’ve built together.”
Nonetheless, hope remains faintly alive among fans. There is a Change.org petition asking HBO to reconsider, with more than 23,000 signatures supporting fans’ appreciation for the show’s warm representation of community, chosen family, and LGBTQ+ storytelling.
To date, there is no sign HBO will take action, and lead writer/actress Bridget Everett herself has revealed no other streaming services have come forward to resume Somebody Somewhere for a continuation or a special movie.
Nonetheless, Everett has not shunned the possibility of returning to Sam’s story, saying she would be open to penning a memoir or, if such a circumstance were to present itself, a spinoff film.
What is Somebody Somewhere about

Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, Somebody Somewhere is set in Manhattan, Kansas. It’s all about Sam Miller (played by Bridget Everett), dealing with her sister’s death and trying to patch things up with her ragtag mix of family and old friends.
It also stars Jeff Hiller as Sam’s loyal confidant, Joel, Mary Catherine Garrison as sister Tricia, and a cast of lovable supporting actors who add spice to the sentimental drama with wit and depth.
Somebody Somewhere distinguished itself with its realistic dialogue, sympathy, and uncompromising examination of isolation and self-acceptance. In three seasons, its storytelling subtly intertwined grief, amity, queerness, and optimism; something rare in today's TV. In its portrayal of its LGBTQ+ characters, especially Joel and Fred Rococo (Murray Hill), it was particularly acclaimed for authenticity and affection.
The show earned a Peabody Award in 2024 and a spot among the American Film Institute’s Top 10 TV Shows in 2022. Nominations came to the series’ credit at the Critics’ Choice, Independent Spirit, and Hollywood Critics Association Awards; Everett also snagged a Dorian Award for Best TV Lead Performance in 2022.
