Ahead of the premiere of the finale season of Netflix's global hit series, Squid Game, creator/showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared some exciting updates about a potential spin-off.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that he has been working on a "possible" spin-off series of the show. He stated:

"I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spin-off-not a sequel, but maybe a spin-off about the three year gap between Season 1 and Season 2 when Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters."

Will there be a spin-off of Netflix's Squid Game?

Even though Netflix hasn't greenlit any spin-off of Squid Game yet, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk told Entertainment Weekly that he is currently working on a potential spin-off series that would explore the events after the shocking Season 1 finale and before the Season 2 premiere.

However, the writer-director has also revealed that Season 3 will be the finale season and that it will seal the fate of Player 456 and the game. Without giving away too many deets about the finale season, he said:

"Season 3 is indeed a finale and you'll be able to feel that once you watch it."

However, he has also reassured the fans that he is not ruling out the possibility of future sequels or spin-offs entirely. Speaking to The Guardian, Hwang Dong-hyuk teased that Season 3 might end on a tragic and unexpected note. He said:

"People like happy endings. I'm like that too. But some stories, by nature, can't have one. Squid Game is no exception."

Hwang Don-hyuk shares the potential plot for the spin-off

Still confused about what the spin-off series could be about? Worry not, Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared the potential plot for the spin-off. He told Entertainment Weekly:

"There's a three-year period and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in future."

It would be interesting and a refreshing change to witness the lives of the masked men, officers, or even Captain Park outside the gaming arena. The probable plot promises a shift from high-stakes games to hush-hush strategies and off-duty moments. It'll be a detour- no high jumps, no red-light green light-just slow burn tension and character-driven storytelling lurking in the dim corridors of this survivor thriller universe.

Squid Game Season 3 is set to release on June 27 on Netflix at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT.
