The Girlfriend, an adaptation of Michelle Frances' 2017 book, streamed in its entirety on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The thriller series follows wealthy Laura Sanderson investigating her son Daniel's new girlfriend, Cherry Lane. The first five episodes see Laura and Cherry involved in a battle of wits to one-up each other.
Laurie first crosses the line by lying to Cherry about Daniel being dead after the near-fatal accident during a rock climbing trip. This lie ends up costing Laura the relationship with her son and sets the stage for a violent finale. The dramatic and tense finale of the show ends on a shocking and violent confrontation between Cherry and Laura, which ends in the latter's death.
However, the finale further pulls the rug from under the viewers by revealing something very dramatic that some believe sets up a possible second season. However, as of now, Prime Video has not greenlit The Girlfriend Season 2.
Will there be a The Girlfriend Season 2?
As mentioned earlier, the Prime Video thriller ends on a moment that could be considered a cliffhanger and open-ended. But as of now, Prime Video hasn't renewed the series for another season, considering the series ends in a way that leaves very little room for a second season. But Amazon may green-light a second season:
"Based on Michelle Frances' novel of the same name, The Girlfriend follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel. Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective."
What happens in The Girlfriend finale?
As mentioned earlier, the finale of The Girlfriend ends in a tense showdown between Cherry and Laura. Their brutal fight leads to the pool in the basement, where Laura comes on top. As she tries drowning Cherry, Daniel, who was drugged by his mother, regains consciousness. Seeing that his mother is trying to drown his girlfriend, Daniel jumps into the pool to save Cherry.
As he does so, Daniel accidentally holds his mother too hard under the water, killing Laura. This action crushes Daniel, and he begins to sob. Then, the screen cuts to black and jumps a year later, showing the couple interacting with Daniel's father, Howard. Daniel goes into the house for work and uncovers his deceased mother's phone under the furniture as the cat is fixated on that specific spot.
After charging the phone, he sees his mother's video recording showing Cherry's truth. Before Laura's death, she managed to meet Cherry's poor parents, through whom she learns a shocking truth. Cherry's father is not dead, as she said earlier, but rather alive, but bedridden. Moreover, she might be responsible for his current predicament. Daniel also plays another video in which Cherry's mother says that her daughter is relentless in achieving what she wants.
Thus, the series ends with Daniel learns the shocking truth about the woman he loves. The Prime Video series is different from the book's ending, which sees Cherry dying. Robin Wright, who also directed the first three episodes of The Girlfriend, spoke about the changes in a Cosmopolitan UK interview:
"I think pretty much everything was streamlined in the adaptation from the book. You know when you do that, you've got three to four pages describing each character and the dynamic between that character. It's a very different animal being able to read who and why and how a character becomes who they are, and having to truncate that and do it through nuance looks, but the dual perspective format, yes, of course, that was in the book. Because there's so much competition out there, you've got to hook the audience. You have to have cliffhangers at the end of every episode. So that was a very deliberate intention when the writers were in the room."
