Prime Video’s We Were Liars has been able to keep the audience hooked to the screens with its various twists and turns. The psychological thriller series premiered on June 18, 2025, and has opened to rave reviews from the audience and critics.
Based on E. Lockhart’s novel of the same name, the show follows a group of friends who call themselves Liars. They spend each summer at one of their friends, Cadence Sinclair’s, family’s isolated private island, where things go wrong one time, and some unexpected truths come out.
The show features eight episodes, which ended on a surprising note, leading one to question whether there will be a We Were Liars Season 2. As of now, Prime Video has not renewed the series for a second season.
The possibility of We Were Liars Season 2
At the time of writing, We Were Liars Season 2 has not been greenlit by Prime Video. However, the show has not been billed as a limited series, and hence, there is still a possibility of its continuation if it is able to generate enough viewership and profit for the streaming platform.
Prime Video could analyze the ratings of the first season in the upcoming weeks and decide upon the show’s renewal accordingly. Meanwhile, from the story’s point of view, the series does have the potential to continue.
There are some plot points in the first season that were not resolved by the finale, for example, what happened to Rosemary Sinclair. After the twisted ending of Episode 8, audiences are still waiting for answers to multiple burning questions.
Coming to the source material, We Were Liars is an adaptation of E. Lockhart’s eponymous 2014 novel. Though the novel featured a standalone story, Lockhart later came up with a second book in the franchise, which served as a prequel and told the tale of an earlier generation of Sinclairs.
Hence, the television adaptation can follow the same route and set the second season in a bygone era, in which some more secrets about the Sinclair family’s past could come out. On the other hand, showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie could also come up with an original storyline, still revolving around Cadence and her friends, which could keep the narrative going from the first season.
However, we need to wait for an official announcement from Prime Video. If the series does get renewed in the next few weeks, We Were Liars Season 2 would take more than a year to be produced. Hence, it might premiere by late 2026 or early 2027. But again, the decision ultimately lies with Prime Video, and the official renewal status and release date remain to be confirmed.
The series stars Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair, Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair, Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil, Candice King as Bess Sinclair, Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil, Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair, David Morse as Harris Sinclair, and Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis.
All episodes of We Were Liars Season 1 are streaming on Prime Video.
