Stranger Things fans can't stop talking about Winona Ryder's final scene, where she beheads Vecna, the ultimate villain of the series. After the group kills Vecna and is celebrating their victory, Vecna is again seen gasping for air, showing signs of life.
Winona Ryder, who plays the role of Joyce Byers in the series, after seeing Vecna, remembers how much Will went through because of him and how sadly her boyfriend Bob was killed by demogorgons.
She chops Vecna's neck and ultimately beheads him, bringing his story to an end. Surprisingly, Winona didn't take more than two shots to film the scene.
Speaking of the scene, she told Tudum:
"You can’t rehearse a scene like that. You just have to sort of save it for the take. I think I only did it twice."
While the scene showed the ultimate fight between the Hawkins and Vecna, Winona Ryder was all out admiring Jamie Campbell Bower, who played the role of Vecna in the Netflix series. She said:
"I love Jamie so much. I remember when he was in that position and we were talking about bands, and he’s the most lovely person. I came in that day just for that."
Why was Winona Ryder picked to end Vecna's story in the Stranger Things finale?
Winona Ryder putting an end to Vecna's story in the Stranger Things finale became one of the most famous moments of the series soon after its release. Her Season 5 character reflected her character from Seasons 1 and 2, where she was fighting alone to find Will after he disappeared and wasn't scared of anyone who came in her way, knowing that something weird was going on in Hawkins.
In Season 2, she was seen putting Will in a room with a high temperature to bring him back and fight the mind flayer, showing bravery. The role of ending Vecna's story was given to Joyce Byers because it literally started with her and her son, Will.
The Duffer Brothers revealed to Tudum that, being the creators of Stranger Things, they put a lot of thought into deciding who should end Vecna. After all, every character has been affected by Vecna in some way or another: Dustin lost Eddie, Lucas witnessed Max's suffering, and Holly experienced her mother getting hurt.
They added:
"And at the end of the day it felt like it had to be Joyce because Joyce was the one in the first season who's the first one to really take action, to believe that something strange was going on. And that fierce love she has for not only Will but her family and the others is a superpower in its own way. And so we thought if anyone is going to defeat this guy, it had to be Joyce."
The Duffer Brothers added that giving Joyce the ax to defeat Vecna was also a payoff for fans, letting her finally use it against the main villain of the series after all these years.
Before beheading Vecna in the Stranger Things finale, she says,
"You f*cked with the wrong family."
The Duffer Brothers added they had been waiting for the right moment to use stronger language in the show, as they had never intentionally used an F-word before during the five seasons. The moment was ultimately given to Winona Ryder during this scene because of its impact.
The Stranger Things finale is streaming on Netflix.
