Following the success of the original series, NBC released Suits LA, this time focused on a new character named Ted Black. He had a history with the New York legal system, as Ted went from being a federal prosecutor to a lawyer in Los Angeles for high-profile celebrities and entertainment industry clients.
At the heart of the series is Ted's law firm, Black Lane, which he ran with his longtime friend Stuart Lane. However, things got intense with a fallout between the two, and their friendship broke apart. This betrayal sparked a feud that drove the main storylines of the first season.
Suits LA explored Black's past trauma and struggles through flashbacks. The series also has a cameo by the beloved character Harvey Spencer from the original show. However, despite all this, the spin-off ultimately got cancelled.
The show didn't work out the way fans or creators had hoped. This is exactly how the first spin-off, Pearson, underperformed and got canceled. So, this shows a clear pattern: spinoffs without the original Suits magic aren’t working.
With two failed spinoffs in the rearview mirror, it’s time to rethink the franchise’s direction. What comes next needs to reflect what made the original show stand out in the first place, and not just reuse its name.

Suits spin-offs keep failing to live up to the original series

Both Pearson and Suits: LA had interesting setups, but they lacked the very thing that made Suits special: its characters and their chemistry. Pearson tried to build a new story around Jessica, and the latest spin-off introduced an entirely fresh cast in a new city, but neither captured the tension, wit, or emotional stakes that made the original so addictive.
They were invested in Mike and Harvey, the unlikely duo whose bond gave the show its soul. Their relationship was marked by trust, growth, and friendship. Harvey knew Mike wasn't experienced at all, but despite that, he took a chance on him, and Mike proved it was the right decision.
Harvey acted as a mentor to Mike, guiding him not only in winning cases but also in maneuvering through the ruthless realm of corporate law. In return, Mike brought out a more compassionate, relatable side of Harvey.
Unfortunately, both spin-offs were missing an engaging duo, ultimately leading to a cancellation after the first chapter came to a close. They lacked the charm and personal drama that once set Suits apart from the crowd.

How can NBC revive the Suits franchise?
Instead of launching another new series, the Suits universe might be better off returning as a movie. A film could reunite familiar faces, pick up where the show left off, and tap into the nostalgia that fans still carry.
Unlike the spinoffs, a movie wouldn’t need to spend time building a new world. It could dive straight into what fans loved. Plus, with the show’s recent streaming success on Netflix, there’s clearly still an appetite for more.
If creators want to recapture the original magic, the answer might not be in stretching the universe further. It might be in giving closure to the story that started it all.
