Actress Luciane Buchanan won't be returning in Netflix's The Night Agent Season 3. The actress played the character of Rose Larkin, a cybersecurity expert and FBI agent Peter Sutherland's (Gabriel Basso) love interest, in Shawn Ryan's spy thriller series on Netflix.

Buchanan broke this news in an interview with Deadline:

“I won’t be returning to Season 3 of The Night Agent. the writers decided that they wanted to follow Peter and his journey based on what happened at the end of Season 2. And so, we don’t get to see what happens to Rose, but I think it’s a really exciting time for the show, and who knows, it’s not a goodbye forever.”

This is surely heartbreaking for Luciane Buchanan's fans, who were waiting to see Peter and Rose together in The Night Agent Season 3. While the couple officially broke up after the harrowing events of Season 2, fans were anticipating that Rose would be back in Peter's life somehow. However, after Buchanan's confirmation, Rose and Peter's break-up seems to be final for now, and our Night Agent will head onto a deadly and new assignment alone in the upcoming season.

More on The Night Agent Season 3 in our story.

Why is Luciane Buchanan not returning in The Night Agent Season 3?

In addition to Basso's titular character, Luciane Buchanan was the only other cast member who reprised her character in Season 2 of The Night Agent. Additionally, fans loved the chemistry between Basso and Buchanan's characters, which makes Rose Larkin's exit news even more shocking. However, as the actress revealed to Deadline, it was a creative decision not to bring her character back for The Night Agent Season 3, as Rose finally got all her answers in the Season 2 finale.

Rose Larkin was thrust into a government conspiracy and was grieving for her family members when we first saw her in The Night Agent Season 1. After she met Peter, he not only became her protector, but she also got definitive answers about her family and past. The last time we saw Rose in The Night Agent Season 2 finale, she had just broken up with Peter and was heading to California for a job promotion.

While things were looking ahead for Rose Larkin, Peter was heading for another dangerous mission in the Season 2 finale. The Night Agent Season 3 will follow a new mission for our titular agent, and Ryan felt that the story did not do justice to Luciane Buchanan's character. This is the main reason that they wrote off Rose Larkin from Season 3, as Ryan revealed to Deadline:

“We always envisioned the show as telling a new story each season with a revolving cast, and the story we broke for Season 3, much to our chagrin, didn’t have a satisfying place for Rose.''

Can Rose Larkin return to The Night Agent universe in the future?

While Rose Larkin and Peter's story is done for The Night Agent Season 3, both Ryan and Buchanan have teased that the actress can return to the show's universe in the future. Rose was a huge part of Peter's life, and he broke up with her for her own safety. Rose's involvement in Season 2's Foxglove conspiracy made Peter realize that his world was dangerous for Rose, which is why he requested that she not look for him in the future.

However, since each season of the show focuses on a different mission, Rose can certainly return in a new season or even in a cameo appearance. Ryan has certainly left the door open for Luciane Buchanan's return:

“I hope circumstances ultimately allow for the return of Rose to our Night Agent universe.”

The Night Agent Season 3 is currently in production.
