We already know that Blue Beetle, as played by the actor Xolo Maridueña, isn't gone for good. Deadline, through a June 2024 report, revealed that an animated series headlined by Jaime Reyes was in development with Miguel Puga and Cristian Martinez's involvement. Puga is set to serve as the showrunner of the animated series, and Martinez is the writer.
Now, Maridueña recently attended the Motor City Comic Con, which was held between May 16 and 18, 2025. There, a fan asked the Cobra Kai actor the status of Jaime Reyes's animated project. The said fan posted this on Reddit:
"Yesterday I met Xolo (Blue Beetle) at Motor City Comic-con and we mostly talked about Cobra Kai but I asked him as I was leaving about a Blue Beetle sequel and he responded with "I think you're going to see me in other movies first." and then he followed that up with "You should see Superman." So it sounds to me like he's basically saying he's in the movie."
Is Blue Beetle in James Gunn's Superman?
While it may sound like Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle is appearing on-screen in Superman, it's possible that Jaime could appear either in his human form or that his scarab-powered alter-ego might show up as a photograph on a screen. Thus, Maridueña's words shouldn't be taken literally that Jaime Reyes has a cameo in Superman.
It is also possible that Blue Beetle is one of the candidates that Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Maxwell Lord interview for their Justice Gang in Peacemaker Season 2. Other than that, this character might also sit well in the Booster Gold show, which is currently stuck in development.
But there are also chances that he can appear in Lanterns, which is the next DCU project after Pecemaker Season 2, but that seems unlikely. But after that, we will finally get the animated series somewhere in 2026.
Xolo Maridueña hopes that the Blue Beetle animated show will release in 2026:
Xolo Maridueña, who played the role of Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes, was interviewed by The Direct's Russ Milheim in February 2025 at the Saturn Awards. In that interview, Milheim asked the actor about an update on the animated show. Milheim said:
"It's a crime that we haven't seen Blue Beetle for as long as it's been."
To this, the actor responded:
"Hey man, arrest me! [laughs] I'm ready to come back. We're hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year."
So, based on what the fan said on Reddit, it seems that the animated show might still be under development, causing it not to release in 2026. But that doesn't mean that fans have to wait till the release of the animated show to see Jaime. Moreover, at the same Saturn Awards event, Maridueña teased how his character fits in the DCU to Collider's Aidan Kelley:
"I know everyone at DC is working hard on our Blue Beetle animated show, so that's going to be a really great way as like Blue Beetle 1.5, 2.0, whatever you want to call it. I'm really excited to explore that side of things... and see how we can push the world of Palmera City over animation. And, you know, I'm ready for Superman to be the biggest movie this year so that we can throw Blue Beetle right back into where the heck he needs to be."
Are you looking forward to meeting the character in future DCU projects? Let us know.
