Beyond the Gates' June gives nod to costar's role on ATWT

On Beyond the Gates, June met Dr. Nicole Dupree-Richardson and told a fanciful story that keen-eyed and eared soap fans would have recognized.

June (Jasmine Burke) came onto our screen in a joint storyline for Jacob (Jibre Hordges) and his wife Naomi (Arielle Prepetit). June was arrested for assaulting a social worker checking Tent City for drugs. Since then, Jacob and Naomi have taken a shine to June and tried to get her the best help they can, even when June objects. However, when June began to get unwell and was taken to the hospital for surgery, Naomi thought to get her aunt Nicole's (Daphnée Dupree) advice, since she is a renowned psychiatrist.

The conversation between Nicole and June today turned into a treat for dedicated soap fans. Nicole said to June that her name wasn't that common anymore and asked if she was born in the month of June. June then admitted that was not her real name — and her actual name was Jessica Griffin. June clarified Griffin was her maiden name. When Nicole asked about June's husband, June said that he had left her, and it was a sad story. She explained that it was a good marriage: they started out as friends, and she was there for him when his wife died, noting that his former spouse had taken a trip to a far-off continent and was murdered. June continued that she had helped her husband through his grief, and the two fell in love. They married and had a child, Bonny, who was grown and a lawyer like Naomi, but June hadn't heard from her in some time.

At this point, Nicole got a sly look on her face as she asked June what happened to June's marriage. June claimed that her husband went back to his wife. Jacob and Naomi looked shocked, and Jacob said that he thought June had said that his wife had died. June replied, “That was what we all believed, but she had been in prison, and she escaped.” Nicole grinned broadly, with a knowing smile as June continued. “She escaped, but she had amnesia.”

Stifling a laugh, Nicole asked if June’s husband's name was Duncan and his former wife's name was Shannon. Jacob and Naomi bamboozled, asked Nicole how she could have possibly known that. June grinned and looked a little sheepish, but admitted that Nicole was right.

Nicole enlightened Naomi and Jacob that in the hospital, they see what the patients see, and Duncan and Jessica were very popular on…As the World Turns. Nicole mused, “I always thought that Jessica looked a lot like Mama.”

Sharp-eyed fans knew that Nicole was quite right. Their co-star, Tamara Tunie, who plays Nicole’s “mama,” Anita Dupree, was indeed Jessia Griffin on ATWT. It was a cute and humorous Easter egg for soap fans, hidden in the leafy Maryland neighborhood.
