As with all new television programs, there has to be a settling-in period where there is an overabundance of name-dropping and constant reminding of how characters are connected to one another. After all, we are jumping right into people's lives that have been going on for years, with relationships and frenemies abound. That being said, that phase now seems to have passed rather quickly, and three months in, we can have conversations with each other and not have to explain who someone is. But more importantly, these conversations are loaded with questions like, “What the heck did Martin do? Whose voice is it saying, “let’s see the color of your money.” There are so many conversations online, with fans wondering, “Will Leslie get away with all of this?” These are being asked because we have been dragged into this soap world of a leafy Maryland suburb (seriously…why leafy?), and we are engaged!

This relatively new soap has the benefit of great writing and amazing talent — some we all knew and loved, and new, remarkable talent we didn't know we needed on our screens. Characters have grown into their roles, and several have really surprised me and stand out to me every week. As a writer about the soaps, Beyond the Gates never has us at a loss for a story to write or an angle to explore.

The best news was that the show was renewed for a second season, so writers know they have plot lines they can extend, with long goals and slow burns they can use to keep us hooked — and hooked we are. Fans of other soaps like The Young and the Restless or The Bold and the Beautiful can find just as much engagement and connection to characters as they have with their current favorites. Although for some seasoned fans, this new soap has become a new fave TV addiction.

For those new to the world of daytime TV, jump in the water is warm. Who will be your new fave character? Will it be the wily, legality-challenged Leslie Thomas (Trisha Mann-Grant) who has taken Fairmont Crest by storm? Leslie’s unwavering quest to bring down Ted, Nicole, and the Duprees also makes an enemy of anyone — and I mean anyone — who gets in her way, including her own daughter Eva (Ambyr Michelle). Or will your new fave be Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley), who’s never far away from another scene, literally. Or maybe you like crime drama? Then, Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom) vs Doug McBride (Jason Graham) will be your hook. Joey is involved in all sorts of illegal operations under legitimate fronts, one being a casino. Doug is deeply indebted to him and may be on the brink of losing everything he holds dear. Whatever you crave, Beyond the Gates delivers, sharp wit and sharp tongues, and so much more is hiding, just patiently waiting for you to discover it.
