How about a Phyllis and Traci friendship on The Young and the Restless?

On The Young and the Restless, we watch so many rivalries in the business world that it's nice when we're treated to scenes with characters who befriend and support each other. We have some good friendships between Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) and Daniel (Michael Graziadei), Audra (Zuleyka Silver) and Sally (Courtney Hope), and Holden (Nathan Owens) and Claire (Hayley Erin), just to name a few of the friendships on the show.

On Monday's episode of Y&R, though, we had some good vibes between Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and Traci (Beth Maitland). Could we be seeing the beginning of another great friendship?

On Monday's episode of The Young and the Restless, Traci and Phyllis shared a drink at Society. It was their first scene together since the Martin Laurent (Christopher Cousins) nightmare they both suffered through earlier this year. He deceived Traci into thinking she was in a relationship with his twin brother Alan when she was really involved with Martin. Meanwhile, Martin kidnapped Phyllis and Sharon (Sharon Case) and held them prisoner in an abandoned mental facility, playing torturous mind games with them against their will.

Traci and Phyllis are polar opposites in many ways, Traci being a grounded and caring woman who never does anything devious, and Phyllis being a fiery woman who spirals out of control sometimes. It's hard to picture them developing a friendship, but their scenes yesterday contained both light-hearted and serious moments that have us thinking, why not?

It felt so good to see Traci enjoying herself

It's been a rough year for Traci and Phyllis, and it was great to see them check in with each other. They confessed they both have nightmares about Martin, and some days are hard for them to get through. Traci felt guilty that she unwittingly brought Martin into their lives, feeling she was too trusting and saying she wished she could be a bad-ass like Phyllis. Phyllis told Traci she is the one who is a bad-ass, which flattered Traci. When Phyllis asked her about her writing, Traci answered with a laugh, "An author never tells her secrets." It was nice to see them take a genuine interest in each other, confide in each other, and share good vibes.

The main takeaway from the conversation was Phyllis' optimism that she and Traci were in for better days ahead, so she toasted, "To the future, to a life well-lived" as they clinked their glasses.

Enter Cane in the midst of the toast

Even Cane (Billy Flynn) wondered what they were toasting as he walked up to them, and Traci couldn't stop smiling. The last time we saw her enjoy herself this much was when she was dating Alan, who was really Martin. It's nice to see her share happy, relaxed moments with others after the hell Martin put her through.

Traci and Phyllis could complement each other well as friends. Traci could provide a grounding influence, someone who could calm Phyllis down when she goes off the rails. Traci doesn't lie or mince words, so she would be the type of friend who would tell it like it is. Phyllis needs a friend like that. And likewise, Phyllis could bring some much-needed fun and good cheer into Traci's life. As she told Traci, "You're a good person." Traci deserves a friend who appreciates her kindness and raises her spirits. Maybe they could be the next pair of friends we see having lunch together at Society or dinner at the Athletics Club.
