The Young and the Restless costume designer, Mandi Line, is recalling a chance encounter with the late Malcolm Jamal Warner and where it took place. The former star of The Cosby Show died on July 20 from drowning off the coast of Costa Rica.
The Young and the Restless, chance encounter
Line, a Daytime Emmy Award nominee for her work on Y&R, remembers meeting Malcolm on a flight. The moment was captured in a photograph, and now, Line is sharing that image with her followers on Instagram. "What a sad day," Line wrote about Warner's tragic passing.
"[T]his day made me smile," she adds of meeting the late star during their travels. "I didn’t know you in real life, but this flight was a moment I always remember how in awe I was. Rip Malcom, my favorite character on The Resident, and so many childhood laughs. #ripmalcomjamalwarner."
The actors who work with the Y&R costumer weighed in on Line's post. "It's unbelievable," wrote Sean Dominic (Nate), who added a crying emoji to his response.
The Young and the Restless actresses Lauralee Bell (Christine) and Tracey Bregman (Lauren) responded using a combination of prayer, heart, and broken heart emojis to express their feelings.
Ties to the daytime world
While Warner never appeared on a soap opera, he did appear in an ABC Afterschool Special, A Desperate Exit, in 1986 as Charlie Curtis. His most recent credit was on the series Alert: Missing Persons Unit; he played Chief Inspector Bill Houston on that series.
There's another connection Warner shared with the world of daytime television. The Cosby Show, on which he played Theo Huxtable, was shot at JC Studios in Brooklyn. That's the same production facility where NBC serial Another World taped until it went off the air in 1999.
After that show ended, CBS soap opera As the World Turns moved into the facility and remained there until it went off the air in 2010. In 2014, JC Studios closed up shop. Five years later, the property was converted into a self-storage facility.
