The Young and the Restless character Chelsea may have spoken in haste when she talked to Adam about pulling back from the darker stuff they've been doing lately -- like the Newman Media hit piece on Jabot that left out some key facts. In a new interview, head writer Josh Griffith is previewing the future for the power couple, and it appears to not be one of lightness.

The Young and the Restless, embrace the dark side

“I feel we’re in a really good place with Adam [Mark Grossman] and Chelsea [Melissa Claire Egan]," Josh Griffith, head writer/executive producer, tells TV Insider. "I really like where that has settled, that they’re back together. There’s a lot of exciting stuff coming down the pike for them. Adam and Chelsea will be forced to tap back into the darker aspects of their characters to help Victor [Eric Braeden] protect the Newman legacy.”

Sally (Courtney Hope) recently pointed out to Adam that when they were together, he was closer to standing up to his domineering father. However, the redhead's relationship with the black sheep of the family ended after he cheated on her with Chelsea, the mother of their son, Connor (Judah Mackey).

In October, Soap Central chatted with Egan about the show tapping into Chelsea's past. "I love the way that the show brings out the con artist side of Chelsea . She's kind of torn between being the kinder person [who] doesn't want to hurt people."

It's not easy when Newman Media hurts the Abbotts, especially Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson), given his past with Chelsea. "He did save Chelsa's life. Chelsea wouldn't be here if it weren't for Billy," Egan pointed out. "He saved her life, and then she cheated on him. I think there's a lot of guilt over that."

Egan also commented that "Chelsea's got that backbone." Alas, that backbone can bend both ways. Of course, Chelsea's going to find favor with Victor if she teams up with him and Adam to bring down Jack (Peter Bergman), Victor's sworn enemy.

On one hand, Chelsea would like nothing more than the Abbott/Newman feud to end, as it will someday affect Connor, who could find himself in boardroom battles with Billy's son, Johnny (Paxton Mishkind).

Will Chelsea embrace her dark side to look out for her own personal interests or Newman family interests? Or is it possible that those are one in the same?
