What happened on The Young and the Restless

At Society, Jack and Diane were taken aback by Kyle's announcement that he was going to ask Claire to marry him. Jack said Kyle's decision was a bit reactive. Diane pointed out that a proposal might come off like Kyle was trying to distract Claire from her concerns that he lied to her about what happened with Audra in France. Diane suggested Claire might not take the proposal well, even though she and Jack would be thrilled if they spent their lives together.
Jack asked Kyle if he'd be doing this if the kiss with Audra wasn't an issue. Arms folded, Kyle defensively shared that he had no ulterior motives in wanting to marry Claire. He said he felt stupid for waiting to propose. Diane noted that proposals are events these days. Wouldn't it be nice to plan it as such, Diane asked.
Jack said he'd take Kyle to meet the family jeweler next week. Kyle said he already had that on his calendar. Kyle bumped into Billy on his way out. Billy commented that Kyle was smiling. He told Jack and Diane that he wanted to talk to them about Cane. Billy asked if Diane was in the loop on Cane's plan. She assured him she was. Diane wondered if Billy was still working with Cane. Diane said she didn't trust Cane. Billy announced that Cane has flipped the script and that they are dealing with a new ball game.
Billy said Cane's new plan is to focus on his kids. He's given up his plan to take over the companies. "It's over?" Jack marveled. Billy said he's not sure he believed Cane. "So what now?" Jack asked. Billy didn't think he had a chance of getting in with Cane now.
Jack suggested they keep an eye on things and that their lawyers stay informed. Billy complained about Jill supporting Cane. He said he wanted Chancellor Industries back, and nothing was going to stop him. Jack pointed out that running Chancellor Industries was important to Nikki as she was honoring her late friend, Katherine Chancellor. Billy said Nikki would land on her feet, and that she always did. Billy said he didn't want to have to plow Jack down to get what he deserved, which was getting Chancellor Industries back in his control.
Nikki and Claire discussed business at the Newman Ranch. Nikki accused her granddaughter of being like her mother, throwing herself into work to not deal with issues. Claire wondered how she could love and trust Kyle because he did not tell her he kissed Audra in France after she asked him numerous times to come clean with her. Nikki assured Claire that she had family to look after her.
She agreed that Kyle should have told her about his smooch with Audra earlier, but noted that Claire was going through a tremendous loss. Nikki said Kyle had good intentions. She wasn't defending him, but she understood it. Claire compared Kyle's actions to something Victor would have done. "Do you love him?" Nikki asked Claire. She replied that she did. "Let that guide your decision," Nikki advised.
Nikki noted that she'd been through tough times. Claire noted her grandmother had done so with grace. Claire pointed out that her life was nothing but lies while she was growing up, thanks to her Aunt Jordan. Nikki reiterated that Kyle didn't mean to hurt him. Claire said she didn't need constant reassurance, as that meant Jordan would still be controlling her.
Nikki said she knew Victor's heart and intentions, and those were what mattered to her. Claire said that snap decisions regarding Kyle and their relationship were off the table. The subject shifted to Nikki telling Claire she was giving her a promotion.
Claire said she still wanted to work with Nikki. She assured her granddaughter that they'd continue to interact, but added that they were folding Newman Publishing into Chancellor, and she wanted Claire to run it. Claire was touched as that was where her dad, Cole, worked. Claire happily accepted Nikki's invitation to join Newman Publishing.
Meanwhile, Kyle met with Blair, the Abbott family jeweler, and thanked her for helping him with this selection of Claire's engagement ring. He saw her out after he told her he'd see her soon about a wedding band. Alone, Kyle admired the ring and smiled, happy with the fact that he'd chosen a ring for Claire.
Next, Kyle ran into Claire, who was getting a drink, at Crimson Lights. He asked her how she was doing. Kyle asked Claire if they could talk. Kyle didn't want to push Claire. She said talking now doesn't feel right. He asked for dinner, not distance. "We've come so far," he pointed out, noting that they now had Victor's approval. He told Claire he wanted to make things up to her. Kyle begged for a chance to earn back Claire's trust. Kyle asked Claire to have dinner with him at his place. She agreed.
Diane and Nikki ran into each other at Chancellor Park. Diane wondered if Nikki was turning a blind eye to Victor's machinations and blaming Kyle or not. Nikki said it would take time for Claire to get over Kyle's dishonesty.
At Cane's train car, Cane asked Phyllis why she was still there. She mentioned she didn't have hot water at the Genoa City Athletic Club, and he should fix it as he owns it. Phyllis blasted Cane for dropping his plan to take over Newman, Chancellor Industries, and other companies. Cane yelled that he needed to focus on his family. Phyllis thought that meant he was putting the plan on hold -- not cancelling it entirely.
Phyllis said that it took a while for Summer and Daniel to forgive her after she faked her own death. Phyllis recounted that Cane built an empire as Aristotle Dumas, and now, he's all "my kids won't call me back." Cane apologized for letting her down. She asked him not to make it final. He said he'd make some calls on her behalf. Phyllis said no, this was the job she wanted.
Phyllis informed Cane that she'd been doing a deep dive into the other corporations' finances. She asked Cane to give her the go-ahead, and his hands wouldn't get dirty. Phyllis asked Cane to hand her the secret weapon, and then, she'd go and conquer the world.
Phyllis said Cane's secret weapon was AI (Artificial Intelligence). She said it was easy, and when all is said and done, Mattie and Charlie will believe Cane had nothing to do with the coup. Phyllis noted her kids will shrug it off as their mom being her usual self. Phyllis tried to talk Cane into executing their plan. "I know I can do this," Phyllis said. "You need to tell me your plan."
Cane said he couldn't give Phyllis an answer. She wondered if this was a stall tactic. Phyllis asked him not to take that long. Then, Amanda appeared. Phyllis suggested that she and Amanda have drinks and, also, that she talk some sense into Cane.
Phylls noted that it took a while for Amanda to get back from France. Amanda said she was busy moving Cane's operation to Genoa City. Phyllis left. Amanda asked Cane if the plans for a takeover were truly kaput.
Amanda said she'd support Cane no matter what. She did point out to him that if he were to go after Winters, it wouldn't help his cause with Lily, Charlie, and Mattie. Cane said Billy and Phyllis were going to spread the word that he was backing off so that he could heal the wounds with his kids. Cane added that once the spotlight was no longer on him, that's when he'd make his move, and that it would be one that no one would expect.
