Boruto carries forward the legacy of the Naruto universe and features a plethora of beloved returning characters. These individuals play important roles in the story, showcasing their growth over the years and laying the foundations for the next generation. Gaara of the Sand is a prime example of this, starting as an antagonist and becoming a valuable ally to Konoha.
However, recent developments in the Boruto sequel, Two Blue Vortex, have fans fearing for his fate. Gaara is not dead in Boruto, but he is currently sealed and being targeted by the Human God Tree Shinki.
Gaara has been through a tumultuous life in the Naruto universe, initially introduced as an enemy to Naruto but turning over a new leaf under the protagonist’s influence. He had faced the risk of dying earlier in the series during the battle against the Akatsuki, but was saved thanks to Chiyo’s sacrifice. In Boruto, he primarily serves as the Kazekage of Sunagakure.

Gaara works hand-in-hand with Naruto and the leaders of all other villages to protect their subjects and face the threat of the Otsutsuki Clan. Unfortunately, after the timeskip, Two Blue Vortex has brought its own set of challenges that are too hard for the main cast to face.
These are the Human God Trees, the newest antagonists of the series created through Code’s Claw Grimes. While the Human God Trees have no particular mission apart from growing and gaining knowledge, they wish to capture and kill Boruto Uzumaki, who knows the secret behind their Thorn Soul Bulb.
Searching for him, the Human God Tree Matsuri invaded Sunagakure, only to be stopped by Gaara and Shinki’s team. However, their group was soon overpowered by the antagonist, and Gaara was severely injured.
Deciding to protect the next generation, the Kazekage restrained Shinki and his team with sand structures and began transporting them away from battle, despite their pleas to assist him. While Matsuri did not attempt to stop his effort, her army of Claw Grimes began closing in on Gaara.
At that point, Shinki freed his hand from the sand and sealed Gaara with a jutsu called Magnetic Particle Barrier Palm, stating that Gaara was still needed for Sunagakure’s future. In response, the Claw Grime bit Shinki, converting him into a tree and creating the Human God Tree Ryu.
Gaara’s fate in Boruto
Therefore, Gaara is not dead in Boruto and is sealed in Two Blue Vortex thanks to his adoptive son, Shinki. Though he was greatly wounded in his battle against Matsuri, Shinki’s magnetic seal places its targets in stasis, preventing injuries from getting worse.

Ryu’s main target in Boruto is also Gaara, as the Human God Tree carries the chakra signature of Shinki. Since he is automatically drawn to the Kazekage, it also indicates that Gaara is still alive. At the same time, everything Gaara holds dear is in peril, as the antagonists, led by Jura, are in the Land of Wind, causing death and destruction.
As a result, his wish to protect the youngsters has already gone astray. Hence, should Gaara return, fans can expect more involvement from him in the main narrative. Since his son has also been turned into a Human God Tree, Gaara will likely work with Boruto to obtain his Thorn Soul Bulb and restore him.
