Sakamoto Days has rapidly risen in popularity through its blend of hilarious comedy, exhilarating action, and a memorable cast. Given shonen anime’s reputation to include romance in its narrative, many fans may be wondering about whether they can expect the same out of Yuuto Suzuki’s story.

Sakamoto Days does have romance, although it is very minimal and mainly just provides flavor in the background. Nevertheless, the relationship in the series forms the core of the protagonist’s identity, while also being immensely wholesome whenever on screen.

Apart from the only canon romance in Sakamoto Days, there are several other ships and hints at potential relationships, although they are yet to amount to anything significant.

The love stories in Sakamoto Days

As most viewers know, the only apparent love story in Sakamoto Days is that between the protagonist, Taro Sakamoto, and his wife, Aoi. While working as a fearsome member of the Order who was known for his ruthless life as an assassin, Sakamoto’s life changed when he ran into a girl named Aoi at a convenience store.

Instantly smitten by her, he chose to abandon his profession and treasure the value of human life. Together, the two got married and settled down by opening their own store. Sakamoto and Aoi also went on to have a daughter called Hana.

This is a major backstory in Sakamoto Days that takes place before the story even begins. It sets up every event that takes place after, as Sakamoto is chased by the ghosts of his past and attempts to resolve them to return to his newfound life of peace.

However, although Aoi and Sakamoto’s relationship is a major turning point in the tale, there is very little screen time for it. Apart from brief flashbacks and the open care that Sakamoto shows toward his wife and daughter, there is no open display of the traditional romance that most fans may expect.

Apart from Sakamoto and Aoi, the most popular ship in the fandom that had a realistic possibility of having romantic development is the relationship between Uzuki and Rion Akao. While Uzuki was an introverted assassin-in-training with an unapproachable attitude, Rion was an energetic individual who instantly got close to him.

She recognized the internal turmoil he was facing and helped him out on several occasions, even abandoning the world of assassination itself for his sake. Unfortunately, due to the nefarious schemes of Asaki, Uzuki ended up mistakenly killing Rion.

While Sakamoto Days never openly showed any scenes to confirm that Uzuki and Rion were anything more than very good friends who trusted each other the pair had all the elements to fall in love with each other. Notably, Uzuki still clings to Rion’s memory, as he has stolen her personality and even believes that his actions are for her sake.

Apart from the two pairings mentioned above, the fandom enjoys shipping characters such as Shin and Lu together, although Sakamoto Days makes it clear that it only plans to focus on its dramatic plot and intense action, leaving very little room for romance to enter the fray.
