The One Piece manga recently introduced one of the most fascinating and complex characters in the entire series, the Giant King Harald. While initially revered among the citizens for his peaceful reign, the Elbaph flashback that dove deep into his life soon revealed that there was far more to his story.

In particular, One Piece chapter 1158's early spoilers showed that Harald was willing to accept the World Government’s deal to kill Rocks D. Xebec in exchange for Elbaph becoming a member nation.

As a result, many fans became disillusioned by the Giant, believing him to have chosen blind idealism without acknowledging the faults of the Gorosei or treasuring his friendship with Xebec.

Harald betrays Rocks D. Xebec in One Piece chapter 1158

One Piece chapter 1157 had ended on a cliffhanger, where Saint Mars of the Gorosei had agreed to make Elbaph a member nation if they killed Rocks D. Xebec.

As per the One Piece chapter 1158 spoilers posted by @pewpiece on Twitter/X, Harald accepted this offer and had an intense clash of Haki with Xebec.

This resulted in both of them being knocked out and their friendship coming to an unceremonious end. Fans have been vocal in expressing their disappointment at Harald’s decision to side with the World Government in this case, pointing out the king’s blatant hypocrisy.

Although Harald and Xebec’s initial meeting was far from peaceful, as the two exchanged blades in Sacred Mary Geoise, they had grown closer over time. While initially, Harald did not wish to associate with a criminal, Xebec’s persistent efforts to recruit him helped strengthen the bond between the two.

While Harald would never accept that Xebec was his friend, they had spent a lot of time together, and Xebec even shared a playful relationship with Ida. As a result, most fans expected there to be a silent form of respect shown from Harald toward the pirate, similar to Garp and Roger’s bond.

Unfortunately, One Piece chapter 1158 has seemingly confirmed that to not be the case, and even if Harald did secretly like Xebec, he was willing to sacrifice his friend for the sake of the World Government. Harald had always been stuck between his desire to promote diplomacy and the World Government’s interference within nations.

The Giant King accepted that there was corruption within the upper ranks, but still believed that becoming a member nation was the only way to bring meaningful change. However, if the One Piece chapter 1158 leaks are true, and he was truly willing to kill Xebec simply because of the Gorosei’s words, it would paint Harald in a completely different light.

No matter how deeply he wished for Elbaph to be a member nation, betraying a close ally for the sake of it, especially when he knew of the crimes of the World Government, would understandably infuriate most readers, making them assume that the “benevolent” kind was simply another ruler who bowed before power.

Nevertheless, it is still too soon to tell whether Harald really did bend the knee to the Gorosei or if his actions had other intentions, due to which fans will undoubtedly keep their eyes peeled for the upcoming One Piece chapters.
