5 Seconds of Summer's Everyone's A Star!: Every track ranked from best to worst

1. Everyone's A Star!

As an opener, the title track lays out the album's theme. The track features psychedelic synths with drums. Luke Hemmings enters with vocals in the first verse. The lyrics depict the role of public attention in individual identity. Everyone's A Star! earns the top spot because it guides the listener into the story that 5 Seconds of Summer want to tell through their latest record. Notable lines include:

"Who made you the preacher?/ Oh, well, carry on/ Blue light killed the dreamer/ Somewhere in the dark"

2. NOT OK

"NOT OK" has become one of the most beloved songs of the album. Michael Clifford has taken the chorus here, which gives the track a seemingly different tone. The production mainly leans into an electronic base. It seems to take influences from Gorillaz and The Prodigy. Some of its lyrics are:

"Alright, are you my little genie or a parasite?/ Girl, you keep the dream alive/ Why you got me stayin' crazy hours after closin' time?"

3. Boyband

This track addresses the public's relationship with 5 Seconds of Summer during their early years. The track uses a retro synth base and a rhythmic bassline. The phrase "irritates the metalheads" comes as a note of how audiences have stereotyped them. The band sings:

"Give me, give me, give me, give me everything I want/ Take my photograph and lick it with a wet tongue/ When I'm dead and gone, bury me in stardust"

4. No. 1 Obsession

No. 1 Obsession speaks about the obsession with constant digital attention. The production is energetic. It layers synth arpeggios with Ashton Irwin's drum. The song's strength is in its pacing. Notable lyrics include:

"I, I know that boys don't cry/ But I got teary eyes/ Oh, baby, can you sympathize, sympathize, sympathize?/ Please, just tell me it's alright"

5. Telephone Busy

"Telephone Busy" is heavily bass-driven. It pairs well with "Boyband" and "NOT OK". The chorus part is snappy and catchy. It seems that 5 Seconds of Summer have placed this early on the album to avoid overcomplicating the message of Everyone's A Star!. Ashton sings:

"I pulled that tarot card/ That one with the mystic heart/ A map of treasures/ Good things come to those who wait, okay"

6. Evolve

5 Seconds of Summer's "Evolve" is built around a bass-heavy structure. The notable pre-chorus eventually releases into one of the most catchy choruses in the album's second half. The song talks about the need to mature after repeating the same mistakes. However, its dance-leaning instrumentation sets it apart from the relatively more introspective tracks on Everyone's A Star!. The band sings:

"Angel above me you've been callin' me a lowlife/ You take my money and you spend it on a power trip/ You keep on sayin' that I gotta get my soul right/ You wanna hold me, but I gotta get a grip"

7. Sick of Myself

This track gives out the band's earlier pop-rock vibes. Its guitar lines and pacing are notable. The contrast between the song's upbeat melody and the anxious message will make it interesting for some listeners. Some of the song's lines are:

"I'm so sick of my, sick of myself/ Wish I was, wish I was somebody else/ Wakin' up next to you, best that I felt"

8. I'm Scared I'll Never Sleep

This song is seemingly 5 Seconds of Summer's latest album's turning point. The pacing slows and the lyrics become more introspective. Vocals have gained more focus than instrumentation in I'm Scared I'll Never Sleep. It introduces the album's recurring theme of insomnia, which later reappears in "istillfeelthesame" and "Ghost." Calum and Luke sing:

"I was thinkin' this would never end/ Now I'm screamin' through a nightmare"

9. Ghost

This is the quietest track on 5 Seconds of Summer's latest album. The song uses sparse and slow-moving melodies. Vocalists sing about the fear of seeing one's own flaws reflected in someone else. The collaboration with Sierra Deaton on the writing is also notable. Some of its lines are:

"Late at night, we're the same, it shows/ You and I, haunted by a similar ghost/ Drunk and high when I need you most/ You and I, haunted by a similar ghost"

10. istillfeelthesame

5 Seconds of Summer's istillfeelthesame comes with fast-paced electronics and an '80s-leaning synth line. The upbeat tempo aligns well with the track's themes of anxiety and emotional exhaustion. Some of its notable lines are:

"I still feel the same/ Your heart's beating different/ Show me nothing's changed/ Kiss me like you mean it"

11. The Rocks

"The Rocks" channels elements from early 2000s alternative influences and features an ear-catching rhythm. The lyrics depict themes of avoidance, running from uncomfortable feelings, and more. However, the song is not as memorable as the others on Everyone's A Star!. Notable lyrics include:

"Keep wakin' up at 3 a.m/ My face regrets, I plan revenge/ You said that life's one hell of a ride/ So why, why, why, why's it passing me by?"

12. Jawbreaker

As a closer, "Jawbreaker" wraps up 5 Seconds of Summer's new album well. The track is relatively short and optimistic in tone. The lyrics talk about admitting and accepting personal flaws. However, the song does not make as strong a statement as the others. 5 Seconds of Summer sing:

"Oh, my American jawbreaker/ Somethin' from my TV screen/ Oh, my, my honey, you're a heart shaker/ Swingin' from the mezzanine"

In an official statement, 5 Seconds of Summer's Michael Clifford spoke about Jawbreaker:

"I love this song because it closes really well and I think our fans are going to love it. I just love jawbreaker even as a word to kind of identify this campaign for me. All the things that we are doing on this album very much embody that word and that that sort of feeling so I f**k with it, it's a good song man."
