X-Men fans are going to have a time of their life as they are going to get multiple projects featuring the mutants. But the most important project featuring these characters is the iconic team led by Charles Xavier. As of today, there are thirteen movies featuring these characters that were released by 20th Century Fox, when it was a separate studio. However, considering Disney owns Fox, mutants can be a part of the MCU.
Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum are set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Moreover, Halle Berry and Famke Janssen are also rumored to reprise their mutant characters in the upcoming Avengers movie. But the project that fans were excited for is the solo movie, which was confirmed to be directed by Jake Schreier.
Jake Schreier was confirmed to direct the MCU X-Men project in the July press conference:
Last month, Marvel held a press conference for the press in which numerous online outlets attended. In that press conference, the Marvel boss discussed what fans could expect from the future of the MCU. It is here that Feige revealed that the MCU will be reset after Avengers: Secret Wars. For the uninitiated, Secret Wars is the follow-up to Avengers: Doomsday.
This reset should help Marvel Studios to integrate characters like the Fantastic Four and mutants into the MCU. It is theorized that Secret Wars will end with the destruction of the multiverse, and characters from the separate universes will be integrated into the mainline MCU. It is in this new universe that the solo mutuant project will be set.
When the GamesRadar+ reporter asked Feige when fans could expect casting announcements for the MCU's mutant project, the Marvel boss said:
"Well, it’s beginning. We have our director, as you know, and it’s starting."
Hearing that the project has a director, the reporter asked Kevin Feige for further clarification. It must be noted that at this point in July, it was widely reported that Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers' helmer Jake Schreier is the director. But it wasn't until last month that it was officially confirmed that Schreier would helm the mutant project by Feige:
"It’s official. Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us and we’re very, very lucky. We’re very, very lucky to have him and we’re very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. The script’s underway."
Feige then went on to reveal why Schreier was chosen to direct the live-action movie, despite Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers' financial underperformance. However, it managed to win over both types of viewers so much that Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers and The Fantastic Four: First Steps are considered the best of the MCU.
When the GamesRadar+ journalist asked Feige why Jake Schreier was chosen, the Marvel boss appreciated the Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers director, saying:
"Jake’s an incredibly smart guy and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker. We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts*. If you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions [was incredible]. He also has his pulse on – shall we say – a younger demographic. He’s younger than me, for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think is important. It was important for Thunderbolts*, but it’s much more important for X-Men because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie."
Then there is also X-Men '97:
In the past few years, the revival of the beloved 90s animated show has been regarded as one of the most acclaimed projects featuring Marvel's mutants. Moreover, Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger where the X-Men were dispersed across time, i.e., both in the past and the future. Moreover, the post-credit scene set up Gambit's return as one of Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur's horsemen.
In addition to season 2, which is expected to release in 2026, there is also a third season that currently doesn't have a release date.
