Did Jessica Pegula accidentally snub Coco Gauff in WTA friends list?

Star tennis player Jessica Pegula was caught in a slip-up moment during an interview before the Berlin Open. Pegula, who faced Liudmila Samsonova to defend her title at the Berlin Open tournament, was asked to list her friends on the WTA tour, and she mistakenly left out her good friend Coco Gauff.

Jessica Pegula began her list with Madison Keys and Jenny Brady:

"I’m really close with Madison Keys, Jenny Brady and Desirae Krawczyk,"

She described the trio as her closest before expanding her list to include other American players:

“Those are kind of like my closest, but all the Americans, honestly. Like Caroline Dolehide, she’s great. Ashlyn Krueger, really nice. I get along with a lot of people, so.

The world’s number three female tennis player remembered that she had forgotten to include Coco Gauff and quickly added her to the list whilst laughing and begging the interviewers not to include her statement about forgetting Gauff:

"Oh yeah, Coco, sorry I forgot her,” adding while laughing: “Don’t put that in there because she’s going to get mad at me!”

Pegula and Gauff became friends as they played as doubles partners in 2022. The tennis duo were the runners-up at the 2022 French Open.

Jessica Pegula loses to Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16 at the Berlin Open

Jessica Pegula, defending champion and third seed, lost at the round of 16 stage at the Berlin Open on June 18, 2025, to 2021 champion Liudmila Samsonova. The match lasted over three hours. Samsonova, notorious for her first serve, scored a total of 18 aces, while Pegula had two.

Samsonova lost opportunities to seal the first set as four set points slipped from her grasp. She finished at 5-4 and 6-5 up. The round ended in a tiebreak.

The tennis stars put up an impressive display of talent and skill and held serve until Samsonova broke it at 5-5 to level. Pegula, who managed 4-2 in the third round, emerged stronger in the next three games and secured two match points at 5-4. The last round, however, ended in a tiebreak, which earned Samsonova a quarter-final spot in the 2025 Berlin Open.

Samsonova will either face Amanda Anisimova or Magdalene French in the next round.
