James Gunn's Superman has now flown past its box office success to be out online, but there was a point when it was only one of the projects in the making at the newly revived DC studio.

David Corenswet took over the baton of the Man of Steel, and Rachel Brosnahan joined him as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult, who also auditioned to play the hero, was later revealed to be the casting for his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion joined them in the cast as members of the Justice Gang.

The final cast beat out several talented actors, and Madison Beer might be one of them. The singer-songwriter spoke about it during her November 2023 appearance on an episode of Say It Or Shot It from KISS on YouTube. When asked about the audition she famously made a self-tape for, Beer said:

“That might have been for the new Superman movie. Sorry if that’s not announced. I didn’t get the part, unfortunately not.”

What was Madison Beer's role going to be in DCU's Superman?

DCU's Superman was not only about the hero's relationship with Lois Lane, or his issues with his Kryptonian identity. James Gunn ensured that it was faithful to comics and as fun and hopeful as it could be. To achieve that, Gunn introduced a range of new characters and dynamics that made it all the more fun.

That is likely why he introduced a secret relationship between Skyler Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio's Eve Teschmacher. His script also had a hilarious, recurring banter between Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl, or Mister Terrific.

It was also the first DCU movie to be released in theaters. So, he introduced a string of new characters like María Gabriela de Faría's The Engineer or Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-el. Singer-songwriter Madison Beer was up to play one of these roles, but it is not clear which role it was meant to be.

In the conversation with KISS on YouTube, Beer addressed the DC studio's audition process, saying:

“They don’t give too many specifics, especially for a film that huge. They keep the character vague and make up something new. I don’t know who the actual character I was auditioning for was.”

As Madison Beer said, the studio may not have revealed the exact details about the role she was going to play. It might be because the film is on such a big scale and scope that they didn't want to get any script-related specifics out. So, in Beer's case, the role she auditioned for is unclear.

Speaking about casting David Corenswet as Superman, James Gunn once shared his reasons behind the pick. In a July 2025 interview with NPR, Gunn stated:

"He [David Corenswet] embodies Superman. My friend came to the set, and she was like, "Oh my God, he has such a Superman face." I'm like, Yeah, he does. He looks like he was chiseled out of a rock. But also we have long scenes of dialogue and not everyone can handle like that pitter-patter, "My Girl Friday," sort of Preston Sturges dialogue — really fast back-and-forth. The guy needed to be able to deliver that dialogue in a way that I wanted it to be heard. It's musical."

Gunn also praised Corenswet's dramatic chops and called him "an actor with a sense of humor." Corenswet is also a Juilliard-trained actor, which led him to find the heart with humor. That's what made the DC choose him as their new Man of Steel.
