James Gunn’s Superman continues hitting box office milestones even after its digital release.
The DCU film was recently made available on VOD platforms within a month of its theatrical debut. That led to concerns about its box office run since it was holding pretty well even weeks after its premiere. Even then, the film is drawing audiences to the theaters and hitting a milestone that no other superhero movie has achieved in 2025.
The newer, kinder Man of Steel has managed to earn DC over $600 million at the worldwide box office, as per The Numbers, with over $344 million at the domestic market and $256 million overseas.
With its global box office collection, Superman has flown past the MCU's The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($474 million), Captain America: Brave New World ($413 million), and Thunderbolts* ($382 million). Fantastic Four seemed like the MCU's last shot at overtaking the new DCU with its box office earnings, but it doesn't seem likely to happen.
According to Screenrant, the MCU's movie about the First Family won't make it past $600 million, which means James Gunn's DCU project might be the only superhero movie from 2025 to cross this milestone.
Superman's success offers a positive sign for the new, revived DC universe

Peter Safran took charge of the DC studios with James Gunn in 2022 and decided to change the creative strategy. That led to the end of the DCEU and the beginning of the DCU. The fans must have observed it through Peacemaker's second season, where the Justice League is replaced with the Justice Gang, which was earlier introduced in Superman.
Superman was also the first DCU movie to be released in theaters, and going by its box office report, it is doing well for Warner Bros/DC. Its recent milestone, as opposed to the MCU projects, offers a hopeful sign for the future of the universe under this new creative direction, which seems to have resonated well enough.
After the son of Krypton, DCU will bring Supergirl to the big screens with the House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock playing the lead role of Kara Zor-el. In January 2023, Gunn spoke with Variety about this movie, saying:
“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.”
According to Gunn, fans will get to see a "hardcore" version of the classic character in a script penned by Ana Nogueira based on Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film was directed by Australian film director Craig Gillespie, who previously helmed I, Tonya (2017) and Cruella (2021).
There's also a Batman movie, titled The Brave and the Bold, expected to be out by 2027, which is not connected to The Batman universe created by Matt Reeves.
