Batman fans rejoiced at the news this week that Weapons director Zach Cregger had submitted a treatment for a DC project. The DC project in question is set in the world of Gotham, which is different from movies set in the Caped Crusader's city. Cregger's script supposedly will follow a henchman who incapacitates Batman, not by using fighting skills, but through luck.
The Weapons filmmaker wrote the script before his 2022 hit Barbarian, something, even the director himself confirmed in The Hollywood Reporter (THR) interview published on August 8, 2025:
"I have Resident Evil, and then I have a sci-fi movie right after that that’s original. And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s a totally original and it’s not a superhero movie. I wrote that before I wrote Barbarian."
A THR newsletter published on August 8, 2025, went into detail about the script, including its potential title, which is Henchmen.
The Batman project, Henchmen explained:
As mentioned above, Cregger revealed that he submitted the Batman script to the old regime, i.e., before DC Studios was set up, and James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to run it as co-CEOs. The director just mentioned his DC project in passing without going into detail. It was not until the newsletter that people learned more about the project, including the title.
The newsletter written by Aaron Couch and Borys Kit gave more details regarding the script:
"According to sources, Henchmen would center on a low-level henchman in the Gotham crime world who gains notoriety after managing to incapacitate Batman through a stroke of luck. The Dark Knight could appear briefly in the movie, while Harley Quinn and Joker are in the project as well. Cregger has not yet pitched it to DC Studios, though the company is said to be aware of his interest."
Through the newsletter, we learn that the script features Harley Quinn, Joker, and the Caped Crusader in a supportive capacity rather than the main role. However, the newsletter went on to describe why this project feels like a pipe dream for now. Because, despite a completed script, there is no Caped Crusader or Joker. Simultaneously, it is unknown if the DCU Harley Quinn will be Margot Robbie or not.
But the script for the movie has fans hyped because something similar happened with the iconic and beloved animated series as well.
The main plot of the Henchmen script is similar to a popular Batman: The Animated Series episode:
As mentioned earlier, both the Henchmen script and the fifty-first episode of the first season of the animated series follow a low-level henchman who incapacitates The Dark Knight because of luck. If the script were to share more similarities with the episode, it would've followed the hecnhman adjust to the newfound fame, and his eventual attempts to survive attempts on his life by Joker, other villains, and the Gotham underworld.
What do you think about the Henchmen script, and do you think this Caped Crusader project will take off?
