As Superman is soaring in cinema halls across the world, fans are getting antsy about the DCU Batman project. We are introduced to the DCU version of the Caped Crusader in the sixth episode of Creature Commandos, “Priyatel Skelet.” Thus, it is known that Bruce Wayne’s vigilante alter ego has been operating in Gotham for a decade and a half.
But the Dark Knight we saw on Creature Commandos is a silhouette. As of now, we don’t know what the Batsuit looks like, and the actor who is playing the DCU Batman remains unknown. This is why several fans are clamoring for Robert Pattinson, who plays the role in Matt Reeves’ Elseworlds Universe, to be incorporated into the DCU.
But James Gunn, as of now, has remained adamant that Pattinson won’t be the Dark Knight in the DCU. He reaffirmed it again in an Entertainment Tonight interview from July 28, 2025. When the reporter asked Gunn about the possibility of Robert Pattinson playing the Caped Crusader in the DCU, the filmmaker responded:
"We've talked about it before, but it's not what's happening right now. Everything's in flux, so we'll figure out what we're doing next."
This means that DC Studios is willing to wait when it comes to this particular project.
The script for The Brave and The Bold, the DCU Batman project, is not complete as of now:
Bat-fans have been excited for The Brave and the Bold ever since it was announced in January 2023. One of the most exciting aspects of the movie is the presence of Robin, specifically, the Damian Wayne version of the Boy Wonder, who is Bruce’s biological son with Talia al Ghul. As Damian is raised by Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins, he forces the Caped Crusader to lighten up.
But as of now, the script for The Brave and The Bold is not complete, and Gunn has been clear that he would not green-light the project or even cast it until the script is completed. On July 8, 2025, Gunn revealed that he is involved in the scriptwriting for The Brave and the Bold, telling this to GamesRadar+:
"There's really no new updates. I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't."
The biggest update about the project came from Gunn in a Rolling Stone interview from June this year. In that interview, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Superman filmmaker revealed that he did consider incorporating Matt Reeves' universe into the DCU:
"It would be a consideration. We’d have to think about it. We’d have to think about it. It is not like we’ve never discussed it."
Hearing this answer, the interviewer asked James Gunn if Robert Pattinson was playing the Caped Crusader in the DCU. Gunn denied it, saying:
"No, I don’t — Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally. And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts."
Thus, as fans, we simply need to relax and wait for James Gunn’s updates on The Dark Knight's project. Considering Batman Day is almost a month and a half away, hopefully, we will get an update by then.
