The first social media post had claimed that ex-Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was stabbed in Indianapolis and was hospitalized overnight. It became extremely popular, powered by clips and local news outlets. That publicity stoked public fear and close examination of the episode.

Police responded to the scene of a call at just after 12:30 a.m. downtown where two men were found injured, according to reports. One of them was treated for stab wounds; the other was caught up in some sort of physical altercation.
