It seems that the excitement level about Mortal Kombat 2 ought to rise even more. It is because Greg Russo, the co-writer of the 2021 film, has recently revealed some crucial information that increases its anticipation a couple of notches higher.

During the New York Comic Con event, Russo, in a conversation with CBR, disclosed the overwhelmingly strong reaction received from the audience upon its early testing screening. He even draws parallels with the reaction that Avengers: Endgame received back then, as he mentions:

"... It was an Endgame-level reaction."

Let us find out what more Greg Russo revealed about the audience's reaction upon watching the test screening of Mortal Kombat 2.

While speaking to CBR, Greg Russo shared the powerful audience response that the early test screening of Mortal Kombat 2 had been met with. Here is what Russo mentioned:

"There were people jumping out of their seats and like, and the last time I saw that happen was [Avengers: Endgame] in the theater. So I'm not saying it's I'm not saying every theater will have the same reaction, but I'm saying, from my perspective, it was an Endgame-level reaction, and fans lost their minds."

Going by his statements, it seems that the sequel has certainly impressed the audience to a large degree. So much so that the producer has compared the viewers' response with that of the MCU's one of the most successful films ever, Avengers: Endgame (2019). And one thing to note, the audience are not simply lauding the film; they have, in fact, gotten bewildered. Now, that is undoubtedly huge.

So certainly, one can expect Mortal Kombat 2 to make a trailblazing success both critically and commercially upon its release next year. Its predecessor film, Mortal Kombat, was released in 2021. It was the third live-action film of the franchise and received a lukewarm rating of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 6.1/10 on IMDb. In total, the franchise has three live-action films, with this upcoming film being the fourth installment.

Starring Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, and many others, Mortal Kombat II is helmed by Simon McQuoid. Derived from the video game series, this film follows the plot of how the winners of Earthrealm join hands together, along with Johnny Cage, to battle the prime antagonist, Shao Kahn.

Its official synopsis goes as follows:

This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

The highly anticipated sequel, Mortal Kombat 2, is expected to release in theaters next year, on May 15, 2026.
