Billy Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, has shared her honest thoughts on his new HBO documentary titled Billy Joel: And So It Goes. She watched it ahead of its release with her mother, model Christie Brinkley, and shared how she felt on Instagram. Her words have given fans a personal view of the film and its impact.

Alexa Ray Joel posted about the documentary on Instagram on July 17, 2025. She said she got to watch both parts of the film early with her mother. She wrote,

"Without giving anything away, lemme just tell you… it’s astounding. What an emotional whirlwind to delve into both parts 1 & 2 over the last few nights with My Mother."

She called the film “a fearlessly raw, reeling, and shockingly intimate portrait of My Father.” She added that parts of her dad’s life in the film surprised her. She thought she knew everything about him, but she didn’t. She further said,

“The deeply layered narrative insights into Dad’s richly‑textured history left me stunned.”

Alexa also gave the film a five‑star “rave review” and said:

“If you’re interested in the full story behind My Father’s complex background, lineage, and personal life… not to mention, his timeless musical perspective and artistry: this is a must‑watch. Don’t miss it.”

What’s in Billy Joel’s documentary?

Billy Joel: And So It Goes is a two‑part, five‑hour film set to premiere on HBO on July 18 and July 25, 2025, at 8:00 pm ET/PT. Both parts will stream on HBO Max afterward.

The directors, Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, cover Joel’s early days in Long Island, his rise to fame, and his darkest personal moments. These include his near‑fatal motorcycle crash and his two suicide attempts in his twenties. The film also discusses his marriages, his family story, and his recent health battle with normal‑pressure hydrocephalus.

Many well‑known artists made appearances, too. The film shows interviews and footage featuring Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray, Joel’s current wife Alexis, and ex‑wives, including Elizabeth Weber and Katie Lee. It also includes conversations with legendary musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Sting, Pink, Garth Brooks, and Nas.


Alexa’s honest take and the bigger picture

Alexa Ray Joel called the film an “emotional whirlwind.” She said she and her mother laughed and cried while watching. They relived sweet and sad family moments together.

She said parts of Billy Joel’s life in the film shocked her. Even though she grew up with him, she learned things she did not know before. She said she thought she already knew everything, but that was not the case. Giving it a five‑star review, Alexa urged fans to see the film. She said that this film is a must-watch if viewers want to know about her father's life, heritage, and music. She said the film shows his true artistic side and perspective.
