Is Gal Gadot the DCU Wonder Woman? Possibilities explored

A Diana Prince/Wonder Woman movie was officially confirmed to be in development by James Gunn on June 10, 2025, in an Entertainment Weekly interview. The interview was to promote Superman, which is set to fly into the big screen on July 11, 2025. There, Gunn also brought up other characters of the DCU, including Diana.

Gunn confirmed that a movie headlined by the Princess of Themyscira is currently in development. While commenting on the DC HBO Max Paradise Lost series, which takes place before the birth of Diana, James Gunn confirmed that DC Studios is currently working on a solo movie headlined by Diana Prince:

"We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now."

This new development has fans wondering if Gal Gadot, who played the role in the DCEU, will return as Diana in the DCU. While her return is possible, it is worth noting that Gadot's return as the Princess of Themyscira in Peter Safran and James Gunn's DCU is not yet official.

Gal Gadot's role as Wonder Woman explained:

Gal Gadot was officially cast as the Amazonian Princess in 2013 for the follow-up to that year's Man of Steel, which ended up being 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. We meet Gal Gadot in costume for the first time in the last act of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After that, Gadot reprised her DC role six times.

However, all of her appearances after 2017's Wonder Woman (except for Zack Snyder's Justice League) failed critically and financially. Moreover, except for Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), all of her appearances were cameos, with 2023's The Flash. After that, it has been a bit confusing whether Gal Gadot is still returning as Princess Diana or not.

While The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker Season 1 (except for the Justice League cameo in the finale), and Blue Beetle are canon, as of now, the canonicity of Gal Gadot's Diana is unclear. While the characters from Peacemaker, Blue Beetle, and The Suicide Squad had little interaction with Affleck and Cavill's Batman and Superman, Gal Gadot's Diana was directly involved with them, making things more complicated.

This is why the most likely scenario is that the role of Diana Prince in the DCU will be played by another actress.

Furthermore, Gadot has come under fire for her performances:

A decade ago, Gal Gadot's name was on the rise, and she attained a new level of fame when she was cast as Wonder Woman. But in recent years, Gadot has come under fire for her limited acting range. Apart from that, she has also come under fire for her past association with the IDF. Thus, the chances of her returning as Wonder Woman are very slim.

What is next for the DCU's Diana Prince?

As of now, the movie is in the writing stage. Thus, we should wait for the writing stage to be complete and the script to get an official green light from the studio. This process will take some time. However, before the movie, we may also get the prequel series before the movie.

Titled Paradise Lost, the show, which is set long before the DCU Diana's birth, the show will be a Game of Thrones-style political drama set in Themyscira.
