James Gunn and the cast of Superman sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly on June 10, 2025, to promote the movie. This interview mostly focused on the movie, but the most important highlight of the interview is when Gunn talks about the future of the entire DCU and even Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II.
But the one thing that has fans hyped is when James Gunn confirmed that he was working on a movie that featured the Last Son of Krypton, but isn't a straight-up sequel. This moment has fans excited because this approach is a bit similar to what Zack Snyder did a decade ago with the DCEU. Man of Steel was followed up by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Therefore, I believe that much like Snyder, Gunn might also be thinking of introducing the DCU Batman through a team-up feature with the Man of Steel.
Why James Gunn might be considering a Batman/Superman team-up?
Even though Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ended up being less-than-stellar, the idea of a movie headlined by the two DC icons is still a bankable one. Unlike Zack Snyder, James Gunn has a better reputation with his comic-book adaptations. Thus, a movie headlined by The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight under James Gunn's stewardship might not be an idea.
Plus, what he told the Entertainment Weekly reporter when asked about a sequel to the upcoming movie led by the Big Blue Boy Scout might indicate a team-up between Metropolis and Gotham's protectors. Gunn said:
"What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily."
While Gunn did not talk about the DCU Batman in any capacity in the interview, some believe that this was indeed a small hint at collaboration between him and the Man of Steel.
Moreover, we already know that Batman exists in the DCU. An encounter with Superman is inevitable:
"Priyatel Skelet," the sixth episode of Creature Commandos, surprised fans by providing the first glimpse of DCU Batman. Gunn did confirm that the Gotham and Batman featured in the episode indeed belong to the DCU. However, it must be noted that we don't know what the DCU Batman looks like. He is a shadowy figure behind whom the lightning is seen striking.
Gunn addressed DCU's Batman's look in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes TV:
“When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman. And I was saying, ‘I am not ready to commit to that. I’m not read to commit to that. I’m not ready to commit to that.’ So I was just like, ‘More silhouette, more silhouette, more silhouette.'”
When asked about the reason for including Batman in the sixth Creature Commandos episode, Gunn answered that he wanted to show that the Caped Crusader already exists in this universe. His exact words were:
“To show that Batman does exist. He already exists in this universe. Just like when we come to the Superman movie, we see the Superman already exists. He’s already known by the people in Metropolis.”
Gunn also teased what we can expect from the DCU Batman in the future:
“We’re gonna do great things with him. He’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman and together.”
Would you be excited for a hypothetical team-up between the Caped Crusader and the Big Blue Boy Scout set in the DCU? Let us know.
