Let us dive deeper into the box office performance of Karate Kid: Legends.
An analysis of the box office performance of Karate Kid: Legends
The total global collection of Karate Kid: Legends has surpassed the 95 million mark within a month of its release, garnering up to $98,200,000. But it is still not enough to arrive at its break-even point, even though it is quite close to it.
As per Deadline, the film was made on a budget of $45 million. So, as per the rules, a film has to generate a revenue of up to 2.5x of its actual budget. So, in the case of this particular film, a total collection of $112.5 million is needed to come to its break-even point. It is quite close to reaching the 100 million club, though, as we can witness that the film is steadily growing to garner more collections.
The film had initially picked up at a plodding pace. Upon its release, it made a decent domestic box office collection of $20,302,016. However, now the domestic collection has surged to $49,400,000. In its international box office collection, it has garnered up to $48,800,000 by now.
So what could be the reason behind the leisurely opening? Well, as per Deadline, one reason could be that people were quite well-versed in the world of Karate Kid, as their parallel TV series, Cobra Kai, has just concluded in 2025.
The original Karate Kid film was in the year 1984, starring Ralph Macchio. The franchise continued with several more films. Continuing the legacy, the franchise restarted with a new Karate Kid in 2010, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. However, after 15 years, its sequel, Karate Kid: Legends, has been released.
Here is the list of all the films of the franchise and their respective global box office collections, as reported by Numbers. It is listed according to its highest box office performance.
- The Karate Kid (Year: 2010, collection: $351,774,938)
- The Karate Kid II (Year: 1986, collection: $115,103,979)
- Karate Kid: Legends (Year: 2025, collection: $98,176,000)
- The Karate Kid (Year: 1984, collection: $90,858,381)
- The Karate Kid III (Year: 1989, collection: $ 38,793,278)
- The Next Karate Kid (Year: 1994, collection: $15,851,228)
As mentioned, Karate Kid: Legends comes in the third position in terms of its box office performance. So, going by the history of the box office collections of the franchise and also looking at the current numbers of the film, it seems that it could easily come close to or even surpass the collections of the 1986 film of the franchise, which ranks second.
