Singer Chappell Roan has disavowed her tribute to late actress Brigitte Bardot. The French actress passed away on Sunday at the age of 91. Following her demise, Chappell Roan shared an Instagram story to pay homage to the veteran actress. She also mentioned that Bardot was the "inspiration" of her song Red Wine Supernova.

However, the Coffee singer faced backlash from many of her supporters for praising Brigitte Bardot. Despite a glorious onscreen career, the late actress remained in controversies for her sharp political takes and remained under scrutiny over her alleged racist and homophobic takes.

Following a pushback from her fans, Chappell Roan shared a new story on Monday and backtracked her tribute. She mentioned that she was not aware of Bardot's views.

“Holy sh*t i did not know all that insane sh*t Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this. very disappointing to learn," Roan posted.

A contrast between Chappell Roan and Brigitte Bardot's views

According to People, Brigitte Bardot was fined several times for racial hatred. The late icon, a supporter of right-wing politics, also had sharp takes on immigrants. Bardot was often caught up in controversy for her controversial take on the LGBTQ+ community. In her book, Un Cris dans le Silence, she called the community "fairground freaks" and blamed it for the "destruction" of French culture.

Chappell Roan, on the other hand, remained an advocate of the trans community. She herself came out as lesbian in 2024. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Roan shared her experience. Following the release of her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, the singer promoted drag queen performances at her concerts.

"It's just a great way to engage the local queer community to that city. I encourage people to tip the queens, that's redistributing funds within the community there, and also it just gives a platform for the drag queens. Some of these queens have never performed in front of a crowd that big before, and it's just fun," Roan told People.

The French actress's death was announced by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation on Sunday. Despite her controversial takes, Bardot played a key role in popularizing French cinema internationally. She was also an animal activist. French President Emmanuel Macron also paid tribute and called her a "legend of the century."
