John Mayer on why he does not consider himself "bulletproof" and the thoughts that run through his mind while performing

In January 2025, John Mayer sat down for a conversation with Conan O’Brien on the Team Coco podcast. Conan said that despite his insecurities, he thought that if he could write like Mayer, he would feel bulletproof. The singer commented:

“Well, I don't feel bulletproof but for different reasons, I always tend to have a different version of the same problem everyone else has. I worry the entire time I'm playing on stage but I don't worry about whether I'm good enough to make it happen. That's set for me.”

However, he added:

“What I worry about is am I playing the song anybody wants to hear right now. Is there another song I should be playing other than this one. So, I have the fear. They're going to walk out and go to the bathroom not because they don't like me but because I'm not playing what they want to hear.”

John Mayer said he sometimes felt unsure of himself when performing his popular songs. He explained that big hit songs didn’t always feel interesting for him to play every night. When he played songs like Daughters or Waiting on the World to Change, he told himself that people didn’t want to hear them anymore and that they were old songs that used to be on the radio.

He thought the audience might prefer deeper songs with more meaning. However, when he started playing those deeper songs, he worried again and thought the crowd might leave because they really came to hear the famous songs he was known for.
