Michael Madsen had reportedly been off alcohol for months before his death

While alcohol has been listed as a contributing factor in his death, sources close to Madsen told several outlets after his death that he had been sober for months. They said he was doing his best to stay away from alcohol and was focused on maintaining his recovery. Over the years, Michael had reportedly spent time in rehab centers in an effort to overcome his struggles with alcohol addiction.

However, Perry Wander, Michael's lawyer, told the Daily Mail in a statement:

"I just spoke to Michael two days ago. I knew he was not well. Michael was suffering from the effects of alcoholism. He had multiple stints in and out of rehab. He struggled to maintain his sobriety. He was not happy about his life."

He further added:

"Michael lived a life of regrets - those regrets being his two marriages"

Madsen struggled with addiction for years, facing multiple DUI arrests in 2012 and 2019. He was briefly jailed and was also ordered to attend AA meetings. He also faced a $100,000 bail after the incident at his Malibu home, where he was arrested following a fight with his son.

Michael Madsen's publicist and managers released a statement following his death that read:

"In the last two years Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film including upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook For Southern Housewives, and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life."

It continued:

"Michael was also preparing to release a new book called Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts And Poems currently being edited. Michael Madsen was one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, who will be missed by many."
