On July 15, Vulture magazine published an interview piece featuring Nick Cannon, where he touched upon his fatherhood journey and reasons behind certain decisions, among other topics. He told the interviewer that he did not want to be like Elon Musk. The interview piece notes:
“Cannon’s large brood, he says, was simply a by-product of his eagerness to appease the women he was dating or his single friends who wanted kids.”
Comedian Nick Cannon reflected on how he ended up having five kids in one year, admitting it was likely due to being careless. He said he was not planning on having more children at the moment, noting that life can be unpredictable. Mentioning his therapist’s remarks, he said:
“One of my therapists says I’m a machete juggler. I’m the boy wonder: ‘Buy your tickets! Watch me do the impossible!”
Nick Cannon shared that during conversations with his therapist and others, he questioned being called a narcissist. However, after taking a test, they confirmed he did have narcissistic traits. He noted:
“I would want my daughters to be with a man that’s more emotionally available than I am. But again, as much as that’s a hindrance and something I struggle with, I also utilize it and view it as a superpower for my sons.”
Cannon joked that people questioned why he worked so many jobs, and he answered that he had 12 kids.
Nick Cannon recalls one of his stand-up routines
The interview piece notes that during one of his stand-up routines, Nick Cannon shared a story from when he was about 18 and dating a 25-year-old while still living with Kenan Thompson. He recalled spending the night at her place and accidentally wetting the bed.
Panicking about what to do while she was in the shower, he joked that he considered burning the mattress or even the apartment to save his pride. In the end, he flipped the mattress and pretended it never happened. Nick Cannon mentioned:
“Watching a crowd go crazy for, really, one of my most vulnerable and trying-to-figure-it-out moments … It was hilarious. From that day forth, I was like, I just always got to find the craziest stories from my life and talk about it.”
Nick Cannon explained that while many people have opinions about his parenting, he focused on supporting whatever his children wanted to do. He said he could help them with financial support, connections, or by being a good parent and giving them access to the best opportunities, like quality schools.
He admitted his parenting style might not be traditional and that some doubted he could spend enough time with all his kids, but he said he tried his best. While he couldn’t be present all the time, he hoped the advantages he had could make up for it.
Nick Cannon shared that Quincy Jones once told him, back when he only had two kids with Mariah Carey, that it was “light work” and he would soon want more. Cannon said he didn’t understand what Jones meant at the time because he felt he already had his dream family.
