Perry Bamonte, the versatile musician who helped shape The Cure's sound, has died at 65. Known for his work on both guitar and keyboards, he contributed to a catalog of promiment albums.

In the early years of The Cure, Perry Bamonte's brother, Daryl, worked as tour manager for both the band and Depeche Mode. This connection led Perry to join The Cure's road crew. Eventually, he became the rock band's guitar technician and assistant to Robert Smith.

In 1990, when keyboardist Roger O'Donnell quit The Cure, Perry Bamonte joined the British rock band full-time, where he regularly played keyboards and guitar, and occasionally six-string bass and percussion.

At the time, he reflected on his membership in an interview, calling the onset of his The Cure career "healthier."

"Now, I'm one of the first to go home after a show instead of the last one to leave. It's healthier, that's for sure. Also, in The Cure we get to add our own parts to the music—tempos, accents.... I think our sound is a lot more driven and noisy now. The guitars are a lot more prominent than on the last couple of Cure tours. I think we're having a lot more fun on stage this time out, too."

Throughout his career with The Cure, Perry Bamonte participated in some of the band's acclaimed albums: Wish (1992), Paris (1993), Show (1993), Wild Mood Swings (1996), Galore (1997), Bloodflowers (2000), and The Cure (2004).

However, in 2005, the keyboardist left the band after rumors that Robert Smith had fired both him and O'Donnell, who had come back in 1995, as he wanted to reconsider the group as a trio.

There were no public declarations concerning the new lineup, but Smith disclosed in a 2019 discussion that he and Bamonte were still on good terms.
