Maria Riva, the only child of actress Marlene Dietrich and Rudolf Sieber, passed away in October 2025 at the age of 100. Being an actress, author, and TV personality, Riva developed a very long and stable career in the entertainment industry. She who took care of her mother in terms of her professional legacy in her later life.

Being the daughter of one of the most famous stars in Hollywood, her life was closely related to the story of her parents. Maria Riva was born on December 13, 1924, in Berlin, Germany. She grew up with film industry parents.

Although her mother, Marlene Dietrich, became an internationally known actress and singer, her father, Rudolf Sieber was behind the scenes in movie production. Riva would continue to establish herself in the world of acting and writing which made her contributions to television in the 1950s recognized.


Rudolf Sieber: The man behind the camera

Rudolf Sieber, the father of Maria Riva was born in 1897 in what is today the Czech Republic. Early in his life in Germany, he also worked as an assistant director and film editor. Although he worked primarily behind the scenes, Sieber had a significant influence on the shaping of the professional world in which Marlene Dietrich and their daughter would eventually enter.

Sieber had met Marlene Dietrich in Berlin in the early twenties in the film industry. In 1923, the two got married and a year later they had their only child Maria. They did however part ways later.

Regardless of the distance between them, Sieber helped Dietrich with her career and she became a famous Hollywood star and always remained in touch with Maria. Rudolf Sieber later relocated to California where he served an assistant director and technical advisor at Paramount Pictures.

His life was rather a quiet one that did not attract the attention of the people until his death in 1976. The presence of a regular and creative background made Maria comprehend the film industry better.

Maria Riva's career as a child actress began in early years and later, she attracted attention in the 1950s by performing in the television dramas on CBS. In 1943, she married designer William Riva and the pair stayed together until his death in 1999. The two had four sons who followed the artistic tradition of their family.

Riva subsequently took care of the legacy of her mother by taking care of her film lore and archives of Dietrich. Published in 1992, her biography of Marlene Dietrich was able to provide a unique source of insight into their personal and professional relationship. With her writing and interviews, Riva managed to make sure that her contributions to the world of cinema together with her family would be remembered by the generations to come.

Maria Riva is survived not only by her son's but also by her grandchildren. She lived a long life, contributing to the development of film and television. Her career spanned a multitude of Hollywood eras.
