As per a recent article by US Weekly, popular NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo's wife, Mariah Antetokounmpo, opened up about dealing with postpartum depression after her pregnancy.
Mariah recently shared her personal struggle and shared that she struggled with postpartum depression after the birth of her fourth child, Aria Capri. She wrote in an Instagram post:
"Being vulnerable nowadays is kind of scary, but if I can help just one person, I believe sharing my story is worth it."
Mariah Antetokounmpo was named Mariah Riddlespringer before marrying the NBA star in the summer of 2024. They are now a family of six with a total of four children. Mariah and Giannis share a daughter, Eva, and two sons, Liam and Maverick, in addition to Capri. She further said that after four children, one might think that he has got it all figured out, but struggling with mental health is really difficult:
“I’m not telling my experience for sympathy or accolades — I’m sharing because I want to use my platform in hopes of helping someone else who may be struggling with their mental health”
“Four kids later and you’d think I have it all figured out — but I don’t. Nothing can truly prepare you for becoming a mom, or in my case, a mom of four. While childbirth was the most physically painful thing my body has enduring, battling my mental health has proven just as challenging. I survived PPD with our firstborn, but I truly wasn’t ready for what was to come this time around.”
Mariah acknowledged that she felt anxiety before even giving birth. She said that she became dependent on the internet as a diagnostic tool, which led her into the darkest of spirals, making her panic episodes worse. She elaborated:
"My brain was somehow convinced I had a terminal illness that would prevent me from seeing my kids grow up."
Though Mariah Antetokounmpo's fourth baby was healthy and was delivered smoothly, she explained that things started taking a dark turn, and her mind was filled with negative thoughts. She shared that instead of reaching out for help, she shut down. Mariah Antetokounmpo added:
“I found solace in isolating myself and hiding what was really going on. Like every mom, I held it together the best I could for my kids and my husband. Looking back, leaning on my family is what truly kept me afloat. I wasn’t myself; I was showing up and caring for my family, but my mind wasn’t present.”
