DCU fans received a major update a few days ago because of a Warner Bros. Discovery Q1 Earnings call. In that call, WBD CEO David Zaslav shockingly revealed the heroes who will serve as the pillars of this new universe. As DC fans will know, the DC Universe Trinity, i.e., Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, are included in the pillars. However, Zaslav stunned everyone by including one additional pillar.

The fourth pillar of the DCU, which technically kicked off in December 2024 with Creature Commandos, is none other than Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. This surprised fans because Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman are the characters that are the faces of DC, and while Supergirl is a popular character, she has never attained the same level of fame as the Trinity.

This is why laying the foundation of the DCU on four heroes or pillars might be a breath of fresh air to differentiate itself from the previous cinematic universe featuring DC characters.

What was David Zaslav's exact DCU comment?

As stated before, Zaslav presided over a Q1 Earnings call in which he provided some insights into the DCU. In the call, he revealed the four heroes who will serve as the beating heart of the DCU: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. The WBD CEO's exact words were:

“It’s important for us to be able to sell our content to third parties [but] as we look at our titles, there are many that are really just for Warner Bros. When you look at the major characters with — that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan around DC, that is to build asset value for us globally everywhere in the world, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl. So those are — we look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators.”

Of the four pillars, we already have a Superman and Supergirl in the DCU, played by David Corenswet and Milly Alcock. However, we don't have a Wonder Woman or Batman yet. However, considering David Zaslav's recent comments, it is safe to assume that we will get Wonder Woman and Batman soon.

In fact, James Gunn was asked whether there was any update on Wonder Woman on May 15, 2025, on the social media platform Threads. To this fan, James Gunn responded:

"Not to be shared publicly yet but yes. Encouraging."

We may get new DCU updates at San Diego Comic-Con if DC Studios is present there. If not, then we have to wait for a press event.

What's next for the DCU?

As stated before, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe kicked off with Creature Commandos, but its biggest test is Superman. The movie's trailers have been received well, but that doesn't automatically guarantee success. Thus, the ball is in DC Studios' court to deliver a Superman movie that wins over everyone.

"“Superman,” DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind."
