The Old Guard 2 director Victoria Mahoney recently revealed that one of the crucial scenes in her film is actually Charlize Theron's idea. Mahoney talks about Andy's emotional journey in the sequel as she reconnects with Quỳnh after half a millennium. In the graphic novels, Noriko (Quỳnh) is Andy's love interest, while in the movies, she is said to be one of her closest friends. Despite those changes, both narratives highlight Andy's deep regret for abandoning Quỳnh and establish their close-knit bond.
The first film briefly introduced Quỳnh as someone stuck deep underwater in the state of eternal resurrection. The second film digs deeper into her mental state as she joins Discord in a vengeful mission against Andy. Even while on different sides of the battle, they find a way to reconcile.
It wouldn't have been possible without the idea that Theron came up with during the reshoots. The scene seemingly foreshadowed a reason behind Quỳnh's change of heart at the end of The Old Guard 2.
During a conversation with Business Insider, Mahoney said,
"That was all Charlize. It was to give the audience another view of who these two were in time and what they've meant to each other. It wasn't just fighting side by side but pulling each other from the dark side."
Let's find out what scene she is talking about.
Here's the emotional scene in The Old Guard 2 that Charlize Theron came up with

The scene shows Andy recounting her memories with Quỳnh from medieval times, when Quỳnh stopped her from killing a man even though he had done nothing wrong. Quỳnh stopped Andy, saying,
"This is not who you are."
Towards the end of The Old Guard 2, Andy gets in a fight against Discord to protect the Guard. That's when Quỳnh is about to blow up the nuclear facility. She looks at Andy and says,
"Is this when you tell me that this isn't who I am?"
Quỳnh recalls their shared past, when she pulled Andy out of her dark side. That's why in the present, she hopes Andy will do the same for her. It goes on to show that despite all her anger and resentment, she still remembers how close they used to be. Whether friends or lovers, they have always looked out for each other. So, even many centuries later, she hopes they do the same.
This dramatic scene from The Old Guard 2 helps establish their character growth and interpersonal dynamic, otherwise saturated with high-octane action sequences. That's why, while speaking with Business Insider, Mahoney emphasized the importance of developing Andy and Quỳnh's relationship after what was explored in the first film. Mahoney said,
"My job was to grow all these wonderful aspects of what had already been planted. How to honor them, celebrate them, and then expand."
She further added,
"Going to your darkest self, many people can relate to that. And that makes them think of the person in their lives who says, 'That's not you.'"
The Old Guard 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
