Pierce Brosnan talks about James Bond, his upcoming film, and the politics of aging
After Knives Out star Daniel Craig departs from the 007 world, it is time for James Bond to get a new face in the upcoming film Bond 26. The film will be helmed by Denis Villeneuve.
Pierce Brosnan, who is well known for his portrayal of James Bond in films including Die Another Day (2002), The World Is Not Enough (1999), GoldenEye (1995), and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), was asked about his thoughts on the movie. In an interview with Saga Magazine, the actor mentions:
“I wish them well. I’m so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character…. I adore the world of James Bond.”
In the interview, Brosnan's co-star from The Thursday Murder Club, Helen Mirren, talks about her character in the film. She portrays Elizabeth Best, a former spy who has now joined her gang of friends to solve murder cases.
Regarding her portrayal, the interviewer made a comparison between Elizabeth and James Bond by asking:
"Is she a better portrayal of it than in the world of 007?"
Upon which, the Prime Suspect actor mentioned that the portrayal of Elizabeth is much more life-like than Bond, but it certainly misses the amusement factor inherent in the portrayal of James Bond. She responds:
"More realistic. But not so much fun as Bond!"
In a continuing statement, Helen Mirren expresses her opinion about the idea of a woman playing the role of the classic James Bond. The 80-year-old star mentions that, despite her feminist ideals, she still cannot envision a woman embodying the character of Bond. Mirren says:
"I’m such a feminist. But you can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”
Pierce Brosnan also agreed with her statements. Even though Helen Mirren's portrayal of a former spy in The Thursday Murder Club might not be quintessentially James Bond-esque, we can expect her character to blow our minds and howl in praise. This is quite evident in her screen presence in its trailer.
Furthermore, in the interview, Pierce Brosnan talks about the film by stating its socio-political relevance about aging and ageism, as he states:
"It will bring great comfort to people who are getting old,"
Adding:
"We don’t really look after the elders in our society, they get pushed to the side. It’s a story of dignity and hope."
In fact, Brosnan even shares his own thoughts about the idea of him getting old, as he says:
"I don’t see myself as an old man at all. But I suppose I would be considered an old man by some and I am getting older, that's for sure. So The Thursday Murder Club dealt with all of those intricacies of the heart that are so fragile to look at sometimes."
Along with Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, the film stars Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Daniel Mays, Tom Ellis, Richard E. Grant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Ingrid Oliver, and Sarah Niles.
Helmed by Chris Columbus, The Thursday Murder Club releases on 22nd August 2025.
