The trailer for The Thursday Murder Club has everything to make it into an engaging crime flick. It has crime, comedy, mystery, and a stellar cast comprising iconic powerhouses of acting.

The Netflix film explores a squad of four retired geriatric individuals, each of whom has previously worked as a spy, psychiatrist, nurse, and union leader. They team up to solve a murder case. The veteran English actor Helen Mirren essays the role of Elizabeth Best, a retired intelligence agent. Alongside her, we have our very own OG James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan, who plays the role of a retired trade union leader, Ron Ritchie.

Joining the two is acting maestro Ben Kingsley portraying Ibrahim Arif, who has previously worked as a psychiatrist. The fourth member of the group is played by distinguished actor and author Celia Imrie. She is Joyce, a former nurse.

The helmer of The Thursday Murder Club is Chris Columbus, known for directing films including the Home Alone films (1990, 1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Stepmom (1998), Bicentennial Man (1999), and the first two Harry Potter films — The Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) and Chamber of Secrets (2002), to name a few.

While speaking to Netflix, this is what the director expressed about the cast of the film:

“This is the finest cast I've worked with since Potter. They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

This film blends a high-stakes murder case with all the elements of comedy and enigma and is also emotionally stirring.

Furthermore, in a conversation with Netflix, Chris Columbus talked about the film by stating:

“There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be very happy,”

The helmer also elucidates the theme of The Thursday Murder Club, and the beautiful dichotomy that the characters hold. Imagine this — a group of aging individuals who are themselves nearing death, engrossed in the subject of macabre, homicide, and death. They solve long, unresolved murder cases out of passion. This not only flips the norm of how we see things, but also builds an ambitious story which is thought-provoking and entertaining at its best.

Chris Columbus adds:

“But thematically it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder. They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are obsessed with studying cold cases. I fell in love thematically with that. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional.”

The rest of the cast of the film include:

  • Paul Freeman
  • Ingrid Oliver
  • Richard E. Grant
  • Martin Bishop
  • Joseph Marcell
  • Susan Kirkby
  • Ruth Sheen
