Netflix's Korean film, The Great Flood, opens with An-na and her son, Ja-in, stuck in a flood, and trying survive. They meet Hee-jo, who comes to rescue them and also informs An-na that she is the one who has to save humanity.

As the film progresses, several shocking twists come to light. It is revealed that the flood that they are stuck in is a simulation test that An-na herself created to generate emotions for synthetic children, such as Ja-in, that she had been raising. To complete her Emotion Engine, she is sent away from Earth, where human extinction is on the verge.

The Great Flood ending explained: An-na becomes the test subject in her simulation

In The Great Flood, An-na and Ja-in eventually get separated as she is sent to a different planet to ensure the survival of humanity and to complete the emotion engine for the mother of synthetic children like Ja-in. However, she ends up becoming the test subject of her own simulation test and comes back to find Ja-in.

In the first half of the movie, An-na's separation from Ja-in is real. However, as the film progresses, it is revealed that An-na is stuck in a loop, and every time she dies while searching for her son, she ends up in her apartment, from where the movie began.

However, she also realizes that as she relives the day again and again, she also remembers small details of every simulation she had gone through. This helps her in looking for better ways to find Ja-in, and she also learns that other people also tend to remember details from their previous simulations.

She also informs Hee-jo of his fate of being killed by the same people for whom he was working to find An-na. This results in him helping her escape from the people who put Ja-in's life in danger.

Near the end of the movie, it is revealed that An-na was the one who came up with the idea to create the child first and then the mother. As Ja-in was created, she became the one taking care of the baby, and grew closer to him. The guilt of leaving him behind made her create a simulation where the mother goes through numerous hurdles to find her child, which would then end the simulation and declare that the mother was ready to take care of the child.

As she became the test subject, she had to go through life-threatening situations to find Ja-in back, and at the end of The Great Flood, An-na found him in a cupboard. One of the clues that helped her get back to Ja-in was the sketches he made of her on her device. In all of the sketches that Ja-in drew in various simulations, were of An-na, when he last saw her, just before she left in the helicopter.

Therefore, in the end, An-na successfully ends the simulation by finding Ja-in and fulfilling the purpose of the test as she grew more fond of the child and considered him her own.
