Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai on November 6, according to CBS News. He is facing a second-degree attempted murder charge for a May shooting that occurred during a celebrity boxing event in Miami, Florida, hosted by live streamer Adin Ross.

The victim is jewellery designer and seller Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, 41. According to the arrest warrant, he told the authorities that Brown grabbed a firearm from a security officer at the event and fired two rounds. One bullet grazed him in the neck.

Nantambu and Brown aren’t strangers. In 2022, the latter falsely accused the former of stealing $3 million in jewellery and spent a month in jail. Later, Zul-Qarnain filed a lawsuit against the former NFL star, seeking compensation for his wrongful detention.

The incident took place after the duo got into a fistfight during the boxing match. Subsequently, in June, a seven-page warrant was jointly issued in his name by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Antonio Brown, 37, was extradited to Essex County, New Jersey, and will soon be transferred to Miami, according to a Miami police representative. Mike Vega’s statement to The Guardian. He is set to stand trial in Florida.

Exploring the complicated history between Antonio Brown and Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu

According to the Miami Herald, Antonio Brown first crossed paths with businessman and humanitarian Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu during Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition fight in Dubai in May 2022.

After getting acquainted, the jeweller lent a $122,000 custom-made pendant and diamond chain to the former Pittsburgh Steelers player. Brown wore the piece on several occasions and endorsed it on his social media. However, he reportedly refused to return it to Nantambu and instead gave him two of his gold chains as collateral.

To make matters worse, Antonio told Dubai authorities in June of that same year that Nantambu stole millions of dollars' worth of his jewellery. Zul-Qarnain was arrested and detained in a Dubai prison for a month. However, the prosecution soon found evidence that Brown falsely accused the jeweller.

In August 2022, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu sued Antonio Brown. According to his lawsuit filed at the Broward Circuit Court in Miami, he demanded the return of the diamond chain and pendant. Also, he sought damages for his unlawful detention in the UAE. The legal filing also claimed that Brown had taken back the gold chains and $6,000 in cash that he had given to Nantambu as collateral.

The court ordered Antonio Brown to pay $970,000 in compensation. However, when the former athlete filed for bankruptcy in May 2024, the order was overturned. According to the Miami Herald, the jewellery designer was able to recover the cost of the chain, although Brown still owed him the damages.

On May 16 of this year, Antonio Brown allegedly shot at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu during a boxing match in Miami. At the time, he claimed on X to have been “jumped” by individuals who allegedly tried to steal his jewellery and harm him physically.

He also wrote on social media that he wasn’t arrested but detained by the authorities. Antonio shared he was considering taking legal action against those who tried to allegedly attack him and later accused law enforcement of “making up fake charges to get publicity.”

As for Nantambu, he told the Miami Herald that he was at the May boxing match to support a friend and didn’t know that Antonio Brown would be there. The jeweller claimed that four people reportedly attacked him inside the venue, including one who purportedly hit him with a bat.

He admitted to being in a physical altercation with Brown, which is when the gun was fired. Nantambu, who has over 112K Instagram followers, suffered burns on his neck alongside other injuries to his eyes and lower back at the time.

The jewellery seller told the publication that Brown might have been triggered after seeing him at the boxing event and wanted to get back at him for his lawsuit.

When the warrant was issued against Antonio Brown in June, the Miami Herald reported that his bond would be set at $10,000 and that he would be subject to house arrest. But he failed to turn himself in. Authorities later shared that the former pro football player was traveling to the UAE and would be taken into custody once he returned to Florida.

However, Brown, who is nicknamed AB, spent months abroad and was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Dubai on Thursday. If convicted on the attempted murder charge, he can face up to 15 years in prison and $10,000 fine, according to The Guardian.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers alum, who last played for the franchise in 2021, had faced on and off-field controversies during his career. For instance, in 2020, he assaulted a moving truck driver over a payment dispute at his Hollywood residence.

He pleaded no contest to the battery charge and was sentenced to two years of probation and a 13-week anger management program/ psychological evaluation. Later, the court ordered him to pay $1.2 million in compensation.

AB has also faced multiple domestic violence charges and accusations of unpaid child support. In 2021, he removed his gear inside the stadium and ran off the field during a Tampa Bay versus New York Jets match, which later ended his career.
