Malcolm-Jamal Warner, actor and musician, died on July 20 at the age of 54. Warner was famous for his role in the sitcom The Cosby Show, where he played the role of Theodore. He was also nominated for many awards, including the BET Comedy Awards, Emmy Awards, and TV Land Awards.

However, the award that gained him major recognition and fame comes from the Grammy Award that he won in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category for Jesus Children. The track was a version of Stevie Wonder’s classic, led by Robert Glasper, and featured both Warner and singer Lalah Hathaway.

Sharing his feelings upon nomination, he told the press on the Grammy red carpet:

"The first thing my mother said when I got the announcement for the nomination was, look, baby, it's only taking you 20 years to get a Grammy nomination."

Malcolm-Jamal Warner also brought his mother along with him to the Grammy Award show in 2015, appreciating her for all the support.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, after getting his name in the Grammy nomination, he said:

"It was a pleasant surprise. I expected Robert’s CD to get nominated, because the first Black Radio got a Grammy, so I was expecting some nominations, but I was not expecting our song [to get singled out]. That was great. I’m excited about the song being nominated, and I’m excited that it gives a nice light on spoken word as well."

Malcolm-Jamal Warner's music journey

Along with being a great actor, Malcolm-Jamal Warner also made his name in the music industry with multiple nominations. He began his musical journey with the release of his debut EP, titled The Miles Long Mixtape. The EP was released in 2003. The same year, he also began showcasing his work at the National Black Theatre Festival.

Four years after its release, he dropped a CD titled Love & Other Social Issues. In 2022, he was once again nominated at the Grammy Awards, this time for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for his project Hiding In Plain View. However, he didn't win the award.

Malcolm once also spoke about his inspiration in the rap industry, saying:

"Yeah, J. Cole is crazy with it. I’m still big on the Roots, I’m still big on the old school cats, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane — those are the guys that still move me. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by and happy for Childish Gambino. To watch his journey has been great."
