A new docuseries, Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, recently premiered on Disney+. It revolves around the final months of the late English television presenter Caroline Flack.

Flack died from a suicide by hanging on February 15, 2020, at the age of 40. It came two months after she was charged with assault for reportedly attacking her boyfriend, Lewis Burton, in his sleep, on suspicion of cheating.

Burton, 33, is a former professional tennis player turned model, entrepreneur, and social media influencer. Currently, he runs a “luxury lifestyle and concierge service” called Twenty3club.

Lewis Burton did not appear on the Caroline Flack two-part docuseries. Producer Sophie Clayton-Payne told Cosmopolitan UK:

“We approached him right from the beginning, and we said, ‘We'd love to speak to you, either [on or] off the record, just for research purposes. We'd also love you to take part in the series.’ He declined the offer… If he didn't want to take part in this, we were never going to pressure him to do so.”

Clayton-Payne shared that the docuseries was filmed for a year, and her team kept Lewis Burton updated, while keeping the “door open throughout the process” in case he changed his mind and wanted to reach out. However, he never did.

“It's really important to remember that everyone grieves differently. Lewis has never spoken about this publicly, and we have a duty of care towards everybody on and off-camera,” Sophie added.

Here’s what we know about Caroline Flack’s ex, Lewis Burton

Lewis Burton is a British ex-tennis player who was born in London in March 1992. He contested in both the boys’ and the men’s doubles at Wimbledon with his on-court partner George Morgan.

Burton began dating Caroline Flack in July 2019 after being introduced by mutual friends. Four months later, authorities were called into their shared flat in London, and Lewis accused his girlfriend of hitting her with a lamp in his sleep. Flack was reportedly angry after finding texts from another woman on Burton’s phone and tried to wake him up to confront him about the alleged infidelity.

Cops found a pool of blood inside the apartment, which they originally suspected was Lewis Burton’s, who had suffered a minor head injury. However, it was later reported that the blood was Caroline Flack’s, who had reportedly tried to kill herself.

Regardless, the TV presenter was charged with assault. However, her boyfriend continued to claim on social media that he did not press any charges. Before her case could go to trial, Caroline Flack took her own life. At the time, Lewis Burton mourned his girlfriend’s death via Instagram.

“My heart is broken. We had something so special. I am so lost for words, I am in so much pain, I miss you so much. I know you felt safe with me; you always said I don’t think about anything else when I am with you, and I was not allowed to be there this time. I kept asking and asking.”

The post was accompanied by an image of the couple with a broken heart emoji. The caption continued:

“I will be your voice, baby. I promise I will ask all the questions you wanted and I will get all the answers. Nothing will bring you back, but I will try to make you proud every day. I love you with all my heart.”

In November 2020, reports emerged that Lewis Burton was dating Lottie Tomlinson, the younger sister of One Direction member Louis Tomlinson. They first met at Caroline Flack’s friend and celebrity hairstylist Lou Teasdale’s party, marking three months since Flack’s death.

Lottie and Lewis got engaged in November 2023. The model-influencer duo welcomed their son, Lucky, in 2022, followed by their daughter, Flossie, in January 2025. Burton also founded the luxury hospitality brand Twenty3club in August 2021 and is the brand ambassador to the All Court Tennis Club. He also engaged in brand partnerships and started a financial education company.

Now, in the wake of the docuseries’ release, Caroline Flack’s mother Christine told Cosmopolitan UK:

“[Lewis has] gone on to have his life now, he's got another life. So, I don't think anyone had to be dragged back into this film. That's not what it was about. [Caroline’s] friend wanted to talk, Mollie, and she was with Carrie a lot during those final months and knew things I didn't know, so that was important.”
Christine added, “But Caroline hadn't seen Lewis after the incident, or wasn't allowed to see him. And so, it didn't really seem that relevant, because everything he'd said was in writing.”

While Lewis Burton did not appear on Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, his social media posts in the aftermath of the domestic violence incident and his ex-girlfriend’s death were shown.

Caroline Flack was also romantically involved with the likes of Harry Styles, Prince Harry, Danny Cipriani, and Sam Smith’s manager, Jack Street. She was also engaged to Celebrity Big Brother star Andrew Brady.
