Why does Julianne Hough want to shave her head? 'Dancing With the Stars' host reveals bold plan

Julianne Hough has revealed plans to shave her head. In a September 9, 2025, episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, the Dancing With the Stars host revealed that she dreamt of traveling to a Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayan mountains and shaving her head bald.

While the 37-year-old host didn’t reveal exactly why she wanted the bold haircut, she stated that it was on her to-do list:

“I have this thing on my list of things I want to do: I want to go to Bhutan and shave my head with a monk. It was just to shave my head, but now there’s two added layers: Bhutan and a monk.”

Julianne Hough takes her dream seriously and has contacted her hairstylist, Riawna Capri, for advice on how to replicate her current hairstyle as a wig, in case she goes ahead with her plan to go bald:

“I literally called my hairstylist Riawna and I was like, ‘I think we need to make a wig that is my exact haircut right now,’” Julianne continued. “I was like, ‘We need to replicate this as a wig so that I can just [shave it] and then know that I’m good for work.’”

Julianne Hough is a fan of bold hairstyles. She debuted a chin-length bob in January 2024. She revealed in an Instagram post that she had cut it herself and added that hairstyles represent a person’s mental journey:

"Hair is such an outward expression of what those decisions are…of the internal journeys that we go through."

On her dream of going bald, the host revealed that she had wanted to take off her hair for a long time:

"It’s weird. I’ve been wanting to do this my whole life.”

Julianne Hough added that her hairstyles were representative of her internal thought process, and her recent experiences have prompted her thoughts about a big chop:

“It’s my outward expression of whatever I go through internally,” she explained, “and I’ve been through a very big excavation process recently and I’m like, ‘Take it off!’”
