For the last few years, May sweeps has seemed like it no longer exists in the soap opera world — especially on General Hospital. That all-important spring month that had been used to determine ad rates throughout television for decades had always been a glorious time for soap fans because...stuff happened.
Stories that had been building forever would culminate in either location shoots (ahhh, the good old days of the 1980s and 90s) or spectacular parties where anything could and would happen. However, sweeps have become pretty lackluster of late, to the point where we thought GH had given up on them. If this past week in Port Charles has been any indication, we're in for quite a month that's set to culminate with the Nurses' Ball. Thankfully, we are off to a roaring sweeps start.
Congressman Cut Loose is ready for business

GH has spent so much time making us hate, hate, hate Drew Cain (or whoever he really might be) that when Portia and Nina schemed to lace his drink with ketamine, it was the payoff we have been waiting for — along with the rest of Port Charles. It was one brief scene at the end of Wednesday's show, but it was one of the most glorious soap scenes we've seen in recent memory.
There was our favorite convicted felon stalker-like congressman doing body shots off a hooker on the bar at The Savoy as Lulu and everyone else recorded the moment for posterity — and the media. We knew we should have felt bad for him, since he was technically the victim in this mess, but it was impossible. That's how horrible the character has become. He has literally no redeeming qualities left, so any bad thing that happens to him is a-okay with us.
But honestly, better than watching Drew make a complete a$$ of himself for all of Port Charles and America to see, were the reactions of our PC pals at The Savoy. They hate Drew as much as we do, so they were in all their glory as this went down. Carly and Tracy's reaction to seeing it all on social media was even better.
OMG! Willow, just WHAT is wrong with you?

GH gave us something to tune into this week, but it also proved that Willow is, without a doubt, the most pathetic and hopeless woman on soaps. That stupid girl ran to her Mommy's house crying like the third-graders she used to teach. Oh no, Drew cheated on her (not really, but still). She had no self-awareness whatsoever that she did the same thing to Michael, and he actually had to watch her in the act in that nanny cam video. Did we hear her say, "Now I know how Michael felt"? Nope. Of course not. All she knows is that Michael refused to see her when she flew all the way to Germany to talk, but she still doesn't know that wasn't even true, and Drew paid the nurse to tell her that.
She is the classic example of a person who knows deep, deep down in their soul that they made an egregious mistake that hurt multiple people, but can't admit it because if they did, they'd actually have to live with themselves. Like others who have been in her shoes, she just doubles down. She needed to believe that Drew would never do anything terrible, so she clung to anything that would allow her to forgive him. Since her mother was too dumb to call Portia and have her make sure Drew's test results were fudged, all of Nina's work trying to open Willow's eyes to the horror that is Drew is for nothing.
However, we do take consolation in knowing that Tracy is going to be cuffed again, meaning Drew won't be getting that Quartermaine name back any time soon — if ever. Also, Willow is so stupid that she deserves to lose custody of her kids.
Speaking of Tracy...

Can we all just have a grandmother like her? The woman sued to own a whole cosmetics company just so she could gift it to her granddaughter. Now, that's devotion. But seriously, Tracy is the gift that keeps on giving in every way. She is grumpy, clever, acerbic, demanding — and oh, so loving that all we want to do is hug her all the time.
Tracy is now the GH matriarch, and we wouldn't have it any other way. When Brook Lynn finally had it with all the Lulu praise and blurted out that she'd had a baby while in high school, the shock on Tracy's face was a sight to behold. That shock was also mixed with love and sympathy, leading to scenes that literally had us crying.
Brook Lynn was finally able to talk to her beloved Granny about something she had held in for so long. And Tracy, being Tracy, she offered words of wisdom and sympathy for Brook Lynn, but when she was alone with Lois, the mask came off. She was furious and knew Lois was hiding something. We can't wait for that Monday confrontation between Brook Lynn's mother and grandmother, two women who have had no love lost between them for decades.
There's something about Gio...

Tracy also just adores that great-grandson of hers — and she doesn't even know he is her great-grandson yet. She just knows she needs to protect him from Sonny because she couldn't protect Monica's sons from him. And Sonny? Well, he is a complicated one because it's very clear why Tracy hates him with the fire of a thousand suns, while it's also clear why Jason loves him with almost as much fire. And Gio? He is now lost and confused because the things that Tracy has said about his Uncle Sonny can't be true.
Except that they are. And one day, even Jason is going to need to face that. Jason was right in saying that he wasn't around when Sonny killed AJ, but he believes Sonny's version of events. The problem is, that version is wrong. By the time Sonny pulled the trigger, Ava was nowhere near AJ. Instead, the unarmed man was begging Sonny for mercy and insisting he didn't kill Connie and wasn't trying to hurt Ava. Sonny shot him anyway, and minutes later freely admitted he'd lost his head and killed the man. Not in self-defense or to protect Ava, but out of his own rage. Not only that, but Sonny went to prison for killing AJ after a jury found him guilty. The only reason he is walking free now is due to a pardon.
Both Jason and Gio are going to have to come to terms with the truth of what Sonny really did to Jason's brother. With Sonny finally coming face to face with his own mortality and life choices, will he finally tell Jason what really happened that night?
Sonny's ready to retire

It really does feel like Sonny and Jason are going to hang up their mobster hats and import coffee for the rest of their lives (as long as tariffs don't put them out of business) and we can't wait. No more of the same old, same old with a new enemy lining up every other year. And what growth it would be for Sonny and Jason to put their money where their mouths are. They want to be there for their kids and know it's time to close up shop.
Sonny has spoken of getting out of the business before, but this time, if it's not just talk, it will be like the Earth shifting in Port Charles. And all thanks to a ghostly visit from Mike. (Putting him behind the counter at Kelly's and not Bobbie's was just the extra touch we needed when Sonny's dad put in an appearance.)
Bonfire misfires

Our younger set (plus Vaughn) got together at the beach for a night of booze, cold plunges, and a super spy mission that involved stealing Emma's homework. Yep, that's why Josslyn was recruited into the WSB folks, to steal her old pal's homework. And she couldn't even get that right.
Danny and Rocco couldn't get their night of drinking right either, so we expect some trouble on Monday when Danny discovers Rocco passed out — and their parents discover what their boys have been up to.
Port Charles odds and ends

How hard would it have been for Alexis to just ask to meet with Kristina when Molly wasn't around and tell her why she had those commitment papers drawn up? Instead, she allowed her delusional and belligerent daughter to gaslight her and make her feel bad for thinking Kristina was crazy. The thing is, Kristina is crazy and deserves some time in Ferncliff.
Where are Kai's parents? Aside from the fact that Kai and Trina are a complete snooze, the boy should have some parents. He spent weeks in the hospital after a football injury, and now he is having surgery that could leave him paralyzed, and he just shows up at the hospital by himself. Where is his football friend? Where is any family member? Why is this boy all alone through traumatic events? We need to know.
Maybe we'll find out next week if Drew even remembers his new young friend just went under the knife.
