Welcome to the latest General Hospital Best of the Week! Whew! What an intense week this has been! There was a major breakthrough with Gio not only calling Brook Lynn “Mom,” but Sidwell shooting Professor Dalton dead and hiding the body in Laura’s trunk! Thankfully, Sonny and Jason came to the rescue, and hopefully, the villain’s body will never be found.

Other highlights included Molly and Cody getting closer, Dante needing to get over himself, and Jordan wearing a killer outfit! Check it out.

Spotlight scenes

So I remember when Sonny was first on the show, he was super intense and very serious. Then he started hanging out with Luke Spencer. I don’t remember the circumstances, but they were in the woods, and I think they encountered some bad guys. Luke used the cover that they were bird watching, so Sonny was forced to make bird calls. It was hilarious because you didn’t expect that, and his less-than-enthusiastic approach while dressed as a city-boy made it even funnier.

Similarly, this week, Sidwell did something absolutely hysterical and against his serious nature, although he’s a tad more jovial than Sonny was in his early years. Britt was freaking out because she didn’t want to work with Pascal. After all, he tried to kill her by strapping a bomb to her ankle.

But Sidwell explained that she didn’t die because “Jason Morgan saved your life!” Then he puffed out his chest and arms, pretending to be buff, deepened his voice, and repeated, “Jason Morgan saved your life.” Something completely unexpected was a much-needed comedic break in the midst of their villainous plot.

Verbal knockouts

Ric comes into Alexis’ office and tells her he can explain why Portia would shoot Drew, but not before she gives him an assurance that Danny will go on the record on Rocco’s behalf. She doesn’t want to hear what he has to say, so he raises his voice to get her to listen, saying, “Alexis, my strategy will help keep both Rocco and Danny out of trouble.” She retorts, “All on your word?” He gets irritated and responds, “Alexis, I’ve changed, okay? I’ve had a come-to-Jesus moment, I have reflected upon myself, and I have evolved.” Right, and somewhere pigs are filing a flight plan.

Wardrobe MVPs

Jordan goes to Laura’s office and is wearing this dark pinstriped suit that somehow looks both businesslike and a little dangerous — the kind of thing you put on when you know you’re walking into a room full of problems. The jacket’s fitted enough to move with her, not fight her, and the pants have that subtle flare that swishes when she turns, like she’s halfway between a warning and a dismissal. She’s got a simple black top under it, low enough to be confident without feeling styled, and the whole look sits on her like she didn’t fuss with it at all — she just threw it on because it matched her mood and walked in ready to deal with whatever mess was waiting.

Pop Culture Shoutouts

Unlike Days of our Lives, which has constant pop culture references, GH keeps them to a minimum. This week was one I didn’t know anything about. In doing research for her new novel, Molly was picking Cody’s brain about country music. A song came on the jukebox at the bar they were at, and he asked her to dance. It was a sweet scene, and it’s nice to see these two coming together slowly. The song was called “Hurricane,” and was performed by someone named Nels Leafblad. I’m not a country fan, and I don’t listen to much music that came after 1990, but this one fit the scene well.

Best Camera Moment

Dalton got the brunt of things this week. Laura slapped him. Emma threw a drink in his face. And ultimately, Sidwell shot him dead. And the shot of Sidwell with the smoking gun was great. GH has often pushed the boundaries of violence on daytime television, and you used to be guaranteed a good fight scene or shootout at least once a month. Lately, they’re few and far between. When Sonny shot Jagger, that was satisfying. It was a moment that had been building for quite some time, and Agent Cates proved he deserved the fate that he got. But Dalton’s demise was different and extremely unsatisfying. See the next section for my thoughts on that.

Observations, Complaints & Unhinged Theories

It’s really too bad that Professor Dalton went out as quickly as he did. I was looking forward to catching some of his scientific antics. The way he went out, while the image of Sidwell shooting him was great, fell flat. Sure, it was a shocking, out-of-left-field moment, but like most jump scares, it wasn’t fully satisfying.

First, you don’t bring on board an actor like Daniel Goddard, who has a large fan base for playing the twin brothers, Cane and Caleb Ashby, on The Young and the Restless, only to kill him off before he actually has the chance to do anything. Heck, we didn’t even get to hate him to root for his demise. Yes, they revealed that he actually was experimenting on animals, and his shocking statement that they moved the experimentation facility to someplace remote so the screams of the dogs couldn’t be heard was incredibly horrific. But the show should have built on that and really made him a reprehensible villain, so we would have cheered when he was shot.

Instead, we got a lackluster death that, while shocking, didn’t do the actor justice. GH needs to revisit how it’s traditionally portrayed its villains. Sidwell is the kind of bad guy that you love to hate. He’s funny and even delightful at times, yet he’s ruthless and lethal to the core. Whereas Drew is just a jerk who enjoys making people miserable. That’s no fun. And now Dalton’s dead, and who cares? He didn’t really do anything. We were only told that he was a bad dude, and only got confirmation of that shortly before he was killed. It’s a shame that the show missed a good opportunity to truly have a cadre of villains that could have been deadly and feared.

Things I Yelled at the TV

You know, I like Dante. He’s a good guy, and if you need someone in your corner, he’s always there. Unless you’re Gio. Then he’s as forgiving as an airport TSA agent with a line out the door. Seriously, I keep yelling at him to cut the crap and give it a rest! Dante needs to calm down and back off from Gio, who’s only ever tried to do the right thing. I am a firm advocate of tough love, but Dante acts like Gio personally unplugged his coffee maker and slashed his tires in the same afternoon.

EPILOGUE

It was nice seeing Laura win the election because she’s a badass, and then she started to come unglued when she found Dalton’s body in her trunk. Fortunately, she was able to lean on Sonny, and while there were a few moments in recent years when she wanted to renounce her friendship with him, this past week proved their bond is solid. Genie Francis should get accolades for her range of acting this week.

And let’s not forget, long before Laura became mayor, Sonny and Luke faced off against bad guys in Luke and Laura’s house, and it was Laura who came to the rescue and dispatched the last villain with a shotgun. She may have been caught off guard by dead Dalton, but she’s going to prevail, and I look forward to seeing how it all unfolds.

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
