Lucky Spencer’s brief return to General Hospital earlier this year had fans feeling that old spark. You know, the one that made the son of the legendary Luke and Laura both beloved and infuriating.
While his time in Port Charles was short, he managed to reconnect with his son Aiden (Colin Cassidy), and the two left town to explore the world. Offscreen, Jonathan Jackson is still unpacking it all, and recently teased something that will have fans in a tizzy.
A General Hospital return years in the making
General Hospital’s Jonathan Jackson spoke with Daytime Confidential shortly after winning his sixth Daytime Emmy for playing Lucky — a role he first took on as a kid in the early ‘90s. Reflecting on the journey between his first trophy and this latest one, he couldn’t help but take stock of the time in between. “It [winning the Emmy] happened at very different parts of my life,” he said. “I was 12-years-old when I won the first time, and so there’s been a decade in between when I was on. So, I have a whole decade of life I’ve lived between the last time and this time.”
That time away shaped both him and his portrayal. For his Emmy reel, Jackson submitted scenes from Lucky’s brief 2024 return — sequences filled with grief, clarity, and emotional excavation. Those included Lucky having a vision of Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) while he was imprisoned by Sidwell (Carlo Rota), and his reunions with Aiden and Laura.
The General Hospital star said the experience of revisiting those dynamics after so long was “very exciting,” and that even though the run was limited, it reconnected him with something deeply familiar — that unpredictable blend of pain, redemption, and nostalgia that only GH can pull off.
Family first, but the door stays open

When asked about returning to GH in a longer capacity, Jackson didn’t hesitate to admit it’s something he’s thinking about. “I hope so,” he said. “It was a very exciting year, almost; about nine months, almost a year of work.” Still, he made it clear that life off-screen comes first.
Jackson and his wife, Lisa Vultaggio — who once played Hannah on General Hospital — have built their lives far from the chaos of Los Angeles. They live in Tennessee with their three kids, and that distance has become both a comfort and a challenge. “Flying back and forth is a lot on the family,” he said. “But I’m trying to figure it out, because I would love to do some more work there.”
For now, Lucky’s fate is as open-ended as ever — the kind of unfinished story that soap fans live for. Jackson may be hundreds of miles from Port Charles, but it’s clear a part of him still calls the place home. (Find out how Jackson got used to the fast pace of GH.)
General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
