Port Charles is still reeling from the fallout of Dalton’s shooting. Away from General Hospital, another kind of loss has pulled Daniel Goddard, Dalton's portrayer, back home to Australia. His father’s passing sent him across the globe for the funeral, and in the middle of a week that no one ever feels prepared for, Goddard shared a moment on social media that surprised him, humbled him, and—unexpectedly—taught him something about how grief works.

How a General Hospital Star Turned a Funeral Mistake Into Perspective

On Instagram, Goddard wrote, “I learned an incredible lesson last week at my dad’s funeral, and I want to share it with you. How would you have reacted? What would you have done? Would you have found humor in this moment, or would you have been mad and upset?”

In the attached video, Goddard explained what happened with the raw, unsettled honesty of someone still sorting through it. “I want to share with you a lesson I learned last week at my dad’s funeral… you’ll instantly realize what happened, and you’ll be like—how would you have reacted?” he said. He described seeing the mistake, that split second of shock, and the crossroads it put him at. “You can either find levity, or you can find anger or upset… and the question is, what is healthier for you in the long run and in the short run?”

He didn’t detail the error in the clip (fans later pieced together that the funeral plaque misspelled his father’s last name), but the implication was clear: grief gives you strange choices. Sometimes the small absurdities arrive at the worst possible time.

Fans respond with their own stories — and their own humor

Goddard’s former The Young and the Restless co-star, Tracey Bregman (Lauren Fenmore), lovingly commented, “Omg I mean, I have so much to say. First being, I’m so so sorry for your loss, and secondly, that you had to deal with that.” Goddard replied, “Love you,” with a heart emoji, and Bregman shot back with, “Love you,” and a kissing emoji.

Fans flooded the comments with everything from sympathy to shared experience to straight-up gallows humor. One fan admitted, “Not gonna lie, first I would have laughed because WTF,” while another said they “would’ve shaken my head, then asked for it to be fixed ASAP.” Others leaned philosophical: “Anger is destructive… humor is healthier,” wrote one. Another framed it as a sign: “My dad would’ve laughed, so I would too.”

There were also dozens of condolences from General Hospital fans and supporters of Goddard's that were sprinkled between the stories—people who’d lost parents, siblings, children—telling Goddard they understood the disorientation of grief, and that sometimes all you can do is breathe, laugh for a second, and keep going. General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
